View Full Version : Need help with Hayes 8 inch disc brakes

Hello,
I went to the LBS today and going to order 8 inch hayes disc brakes for my bike. I have a 01 Marzocchi Z3 air fork that accepts a regular size axle. The bike told me that I can't put 8 inch hayes disc brake on my Marzoochi and that I need a 20mm Thru Axle. Is this true? The fork is a standard international disc tabs. Let me know if you have info.

Single crown forks needs a 20mm axle for 8" rotors.

I currently have 8 inch avid's on their so I guess 8 inch Hayes does make a difference then?

From what I have heard, the torque will do a number on the internals of your fork.
I''ve been doing this for a year. NO PROBLEM.
Get a Psylo 8" adapter (i think there is one) or a rear I.S. adapter, I think. Since I use XTs it's hard to say what the Hayes setup is but it's VERY do-able. Don't listen to all the people who "heard somewhere" that it's a no-no.
You might be able to do what I did, which is put a Grimeca 6->8" IS adapter, and then bolt the normal 6" Hayes mount onto it. That's a lot of adapters though....
If you currently have 8" Avids on there, Hayes will make NO DIFFERENCE. Just bolt the Hayes caliper to the Avid 8" mount, if you can't do it any other way. You might have to put some spacers in to account for all the CPS washers that Avid uses, but it should work.

Nope.
1- i don't think it matters in reality
2- Grimeca rotors are "supposed" to go the opposite of XTs

I talked to the Marzocchi tech rep for a customer about running a 8 inch rotors on their standard dropouts and he said not to. Hayes does not make an adaptor for the non-20mm because the have had people breaking the hub axels and pulling the wheels off of the drop outs while braking.

Please do a search on previous 8" rotor discussions. You will find tons of info there that not everybody will be able to repeat.
LOL. Carbon F - I am not concerned about what the official manufacturer's lawyer-driven position on this is. I am concerned about what works well in reality. If 1 in 10,000 of these cause broken hub axles, well, that's 9,999 that don't and I'm willing to take that chance. As KD said, there have been some pretty good discussions here on why 8" really isn't a problem. One thread in the DH forum springs to mind, check it out.;)

I saw that you have some pictures. Is the 8 inch setup on your brodie? The bike with the dual crown fork?

yep. That's a Jr. T, which I can't wait to get rid of. I don't think there's any difference between a single and dual crown fork for the purposes of 8" rotors. The only issue at work is skewer strength; if you use a weak skewer you can pull the wheel out of the dropout (used to happen to me all the time with a 6" rotor, go figure). SO make sure you use a Shimano skewer, they're the most powerful one out there.
