i like a good lard, butter melts at a too low temp ;)
just use any grease you've got lying around, lithium grease is fine.

vaseline? :D it's not good for bbs, but for other areas of the bike, is it fine?

you *could* use it if you were desperate, but it would be a bad idea as it has a really low melting temp.

Just get your booty on over to the LBS and buy yo'self a tube of Park grease or a tub if you can afford it. that stuff is great, and it stays pretty clean cause it doesn't oxydize like the other stuff, Meaning it doesn't get all yellowie and runny
My 2 cents
I've always either used a white lithium grease, or phil wood's waterproof grease. I think the white lithium is a better grease, but phil woods does a great job of holding loose balls in place while you reassemble non-cartridge systems.

The lower part of my headset isn't cartrige and that's the part I need grease for. I'm positive rei has the phil stuff, but I'll also look at the white lithium and park stuff.
