I was watchin Lopes doing his thing and the announcer mentioned he had a new lockout on his fork that allowed him to start out fully compressed and rigid until he hit his first impact.

Though this seems like a race specific modification, it is some very smart thinking by fox and seems like a real advantage for him at the start. Some people seem to like to bag racing and competition, but this is where innovation comes from.

That is a great idea for him to get a more powerful sprint out of the gate and start using travel only when he needs it.

Actually it very similar to the Marzocchi ECC cartridge, except the ECC requires manual release.

All this came from motocross technology, the riders compress there forks before the start, this allows to put more power without wheeling, then by pressing a botton they release the fork for full travel.

yea my z1 has ecc except too bad marzocchi didn't put better engineering into it because mine, and many other peoples', never worked since the day I got it. It's a shame cuz it's such a good idea.

I tried my friends, 1 month old z1 freeride, and it worked good. I hope they worked out the problems thsi year.

I'm callin marzocchi today. about my ecc and the thing makes this annoying creaking noise every time I land, even if its just after a manual.

Are you sure it's not coming from the crown or the arch?

Okay, maybe I am a bit of a TW, but the lockdown apparatus kitted on factory motocross bikes is activated with a button on the fork leg itself. I locks the susp about 3/4 way down in its stroke to as you said control wheelies. When the bike hits a bump down the track that would push the storke farther hte button self relaeses and everything is back to normal for the rest of the moto. The lockouts on MTB rigs offered by the fork companies for the masses usually lock out the compression feature of a fork so the fork will not bob. This sets the biekup for flats where you are really pumping for less energy transfer to the front end and subsequent power loss from the pedal stroke. It also helps on climbs. I have a lockout on my Manitou SX-Hybrid and it seems to work well. It's so rocky here even on the flats, that I adjusted the lockout internally to give a small amount of compliance so I don't end up on my head.

lopes's system is just like the motocross system, locks it down about half way, and the releases aafter the first bump. Like that guy really needs any more help wiht his starts, he already schools everyone on the starts...
