I miss riding my XC bike, however it would probably ride a lot better on wheels that weren't square.

Using KB's calculation for purchasing bike parts, what your favorite cheap and strong XC wheelset?

Mavic X221 or X223 (depending on disc or non)
DT 15g spokes, brass nipples
XT hubs

Try Sun Ringle Ryno Lites. I've seen the Mavic 517's for under $200 as a full set, rims, spokes and hubs (non-disc). Depends if you want black or silver rims. Most sales are in silver since they are not as popular as black.

Or you could order rims, spokes and hubs seperatly and build them your self. It's not that hard.

KB = Keith Bontrager (also), who said:

"Light, strong, cheap; pick any two."

Smart fella(s) that(those) KB(s)

Heheheh....a KB imposter! :D

Actually, that "calculation" applies to a lot of things.
We often have to use that with our clients in design projects:

"Speed of design, quality of design, price of design"...ya gotta sacrifice one of 'em.

I don't know if they are still available but a little while ago I got a set of xt hubs built to sun zero degree light rims for around 150 and I don't think they ever needed truing.
