The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has two separate projects starting Monday, July 7th that will affect the NW Timber trail and the S. Tiger Traverse trail located on Tiger Mountain. Both of these trails will be temporarily closed to the public.

NW Timber Trail - This last winter the DNR received a grant to replace five bridges on the NW timber trail and the Connector trail. They will be completing the work and all five bridges will be removed from the trail starting Monday, July 7th in preparation for bringing in the new bridges. Since access is limited on this trail, a helicopter will be used to bring in the bridge materials on site. We anticipate that the trail will re-open again with new trail bridges the week of Aug. 8th.

South Tiger Traverse - Starting July 7th; contractors will begin working on the Peacock timber sale. This will be a two year project with this year focusing on building the road for the sale and next year focusing on completing the harvest. Starting July 7th, the upper section of the S. Tiger Traverse will be closed for the rest of the summer. This trail will re-open again in late fall.

These trail closures will affect all recreational users including equestrians, mountain bikers and hikers.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Hikers hardly use our side of the area any more. The Harvey Manning era is over its our time now. The time to expand our rights is now. Riding is not a crime!

You are correct. The closure starts today (the 7th) and will be for approximately 30 days.

DNR is probably putting in some heavy duty bridges in the hope that they'll last 20-30 years... and that probably means creating heavy duty footings for the bridges to sit on. A bit of excavation, buiding footings, installing bridges... before you know it a few weeks are gone.

Oh, and remember those trails are open to horses, so they HAVE to use pretty solid bridges to keep the trails up to standard.

Couldn't this wait until...say....November?

Thoughts:
1. **** horses
2. A month is not "temporary"
3. **** horses.

is NW Timber trail the 'beginner' section?

I'm new to mtn biking and am always looking for beginner/mellow stuff. Gone once to soaring eagle. probably going back again.

Joel - The NW Timber Trail is I'd say, beginner to intermediate... it's all relative though.

Although it's not ideal that they close NW Timber in the middle of the summer, those new bridges will be great and it's wonderful that the DNR was able to get the NOVA grant to replace them. This circumvents potentailly longer closures due to a bridge collapse... and some of those were on their last leg for sure after the past few winters.

What exactly is the S. Tiger Traverse? I'm not really familiar with that.

What exactly is the S. Tiger Traverse? I'm not really familiar with that.

The S. Tiger Traverse spans between the South Tiger Powerlines and the West Side Road which links up on the west side of the Iverson Trail. It is not open to bikers anyway but due to the fact that they will be logging the area, I wanted to post it so that folks were aware that there will be logging trucks coming down the roads.
