View Full Version : Ti spindle for Howitzer bb?

Are there any companies making a ti spindle for the Truvativ Howitzer Team bb?

The Holzfeller OCT cranks that I have are strong and light, but 365grams for the bb is tankish.

How much weight do you actually plan on losing by putting a Ti in there???

If you went for some Demolition Medial LT's or Deity Vendetta's w/ ti spindle, you'd save approximately 100 grams (820g vs. 920g)

...but that would mean I'd have to run one of those funky 3-piece style cranks that for whatever reason I've never been a fan of.

I might put the truvativ setup on the hardtail and put some xt or xtr cranks on my socom.

If someone made one... 100 grams maybe? The rest of the bb weighs nothing, that spindle is an anchor.

maybe because it is a very important component?...and by replacing it with a Ti, it would cost you a lot of money and losing weight in that place isn't exactly a high priority unless you already got Ti everything else. Having heavy stuff (relative to the rest of the bike) in the middle of the bike can to some extend improve its handling regarding its kinematics.

I have to agree with the BB being the last place I would owrry about weight. The Howitzer drive is strong as hell, thats the reason its using an M12 bolt not the normal M15. They built a system with a much thicker BB spindle wall. The only place I can see you would get a Ti spindle would be to have a Machine shop make on.

On a side note, you might be able to make some cash if you were to get the specs all dialed in, then whenever someone wanted one, you could just have your machinist spit one out

I was just looking at teh Truvativ website, If you wanted to lighten up the BB you could always use the xr M15 spindle. Your saving about 65 grams that way. The bearing cups are the same, so you sould just be needing to use the actual spindle itself

That might not be a bad way to go, I'll look into it. I need new cups anyways since one of mine got dented and trashed the seals.

Why not try to take some weight out from the higher points of the bike.
weight in the lower part doesn't really matter because its not being thrown around as much. It would be cool though.

If you really wanna shed some weight, swap out your skeleton. its made of bone and is kinda heavy. Carbon fiber ones perform almost identically, but the weight is only a fraction.

I looked online at a place that sold titanium rod stock in the event that i decided to go have a custom spindle machined. $300+ for a piece 20mm diameter and 200mm long. Sheeezzz. Hopefully it was the wrong grade or something.

It doesn't look like it would be too difficult since the dimensions for isis drive are available.

I'm probably going to ditch the idea though, it's not worth $300 plus labor.

Buy some Raceface Atlas cranks it will be cheaper and lighter 950 grams for the cranks,bb and rings or lighter for a single ring.

The machine shop would either need the broaching tooling or need to make a custom cutter or electrode for the splines. It's not impossible but it would cost a lot.

I used to try to save weight with ideas like this. However, I played around with different bottom brackets and I can not really tell the weight difference while riding. I can definatly tell the difference higher on the bike or in the wheels.
