so i order some DDR (not DDR2 memory) for my DDR400 setup. what's now obvious is that it isn't recognized at post.

isn't there some cmos tweak i can do?

It should all be compatible. It'll just run at the maximum speed of your motherboard or the other memory, whichever is slowest.

Does your BIOS report it?

Does your BIOS report it?it reads "15978...k" (1.5G) memory detected OK, but then proceeds to do nothing after that.

this really shouldn't be an issue unless the stick was incorrectly advertised/labeled as DDR, when it's looking like it's DDR2. if DDR2, then what?

edit: it's an AMD sempron 2800, if that helps

should work.

ok, cracking box open again...

Can't fit DDR2 memory into a DDR socket.

Try out the chips one at a time and see if there's a bad one in there.

Can't fit DDR2 memory into a DDR socket.i'm taking 'socket' to mean 'slot', which would mean it's physically impossible to put the mem in the first place
Try out the chips one at a time and see if there's a bad one in there.i did explicit mem check at bootup & it fails around 524M in either slot

Does this mean that you bought one PC3200 stick and putting in the new stick alone fails in both of the possible slots?

Does this mean that you bought one PC3200 stick and putting in the new stick alone fails in both of the possible slots?previously, i had
slot 1: 256
slot 2: 512

i've done every permutation swapping the new 1G stick in either slot, w/ the 256 or the 512, and it always fails the mem check. my 512 is a kingston kvr400x64c3a & my 256 is the cheap stick that came bundled w/ the box.

edit: w/ just the 1G stick by itself it doesn't even get off the ground. no post, no mem check, no nuthin'

one other thing: this mem is high-density, & now i need to find out if my mobo can accept it.

i have a feeling...

yep, i need low density it seems.
i fell for the latest in off-loading vastly unusable pc memory.

I was going to buy pc3200 memory and ended up getting a new pile 'o everything but the case.

PC6400 memory was $70 for 4G.
