View Full Version : Changing the Torch Route: A good thing?

I personally feel cheated by the change in the torch route today. We have a right to protest and ultimately, the torch run is in support of China.
However, I believe if the torch run did go down thru the heart of the protest, there would be riot cops shoving people onto the ground.
What do you think was the better solution?

the IOC was dumb and should have sent the torch to any other US city than the gay bay area.

With the amount of hassle the torch run has been causing cities and police I don't blame them. You still got to protest, right? You just didn't get your chance to shoot the flame with a super soaker
Looks like the IOC is starting to get worried:

Changing the route sure made for a daft looking spectacle. Perhaps that was the idea.

I'd be more concerned about people boycotting *watching* the Olympics than by some protests about a torch. Protests make them look bad, low viewer ratings means they lose a LOT of money instead...
It's the Visa/MasterCard Olympics anyway..

Doesn't hiding the torch pretty much defeat the purpose of parading it across the world?
in the future there will be a 'virtual' torch and it will be paraded across SecondLife by RonPaulers..

And... if you honestly wanted to see history, see the torch, enjoy the moment, and you took yesterday off of work or whatever... how fockin' pissed would you have been?

Thats a good point, the protests ruin the experience for everyone.

well, I'm saying that protests should be allowed, but the IOC outright deceiving fans is garbage.

I hate it when I agree w/you:)
Tibet is just a guise b/c americans have already accepted the exploited labor, environmental raping and american job loss due to unfair trade w/China. All people have left to get people to listen is Tibet.
Olympics have become the biggest business of all. Even the Mormans bribed to get them to Utah.

Not that anyone cares at this point, but I had a long chat with my uncle, a community organizer in Chinatown and until recently, a director in the SF government.
He was actually against the route change, making several very good points. He also had a small grudge against Newsom, the mayor, since he was ousted due to Newsom's cronyism.
I realize now that if Newsom thought there was going to be trouble, he must have known it would have been chaos, and he should have just canceled the event or have the torch run in the Presidio or just around the ballpark.
Because by changing the route, considering the expense for the police has been made and public safety was already compromised, then all you are doing is making the torch run look good for the Chinese gov't.

They Olympics became a joke once they let the ranks fill with Pros. It is just another sports driven cash cow and an excuse for all the closet gymnastics and figure skating fans to step out into daylight every few years.

Aw come on. You remember that thread you posted in the lounge with pics from that little girl's photobucket account. She had some dorky goth nickname that you used for the thread title. It was one of about two or three threads you started where you were making fun of nicknames of these kids. But they were all teenage girls......and it was obvious you were snooping around their picture collections.
I guess you're fortunate that nothing past early 2006 comes up in a search, but I know you remember it too.

Good idea. The fact that the route had to be changed is embarrassing enough to the Chinese for those in the land of the free press, and there was plenty of coverage of the protests and clashes. We don't need to allow the Chinese to play diplomatic victims.
Plus, you have a right to protest, but the Chinese (or anyone else) aren't obligated to show up for you... :)
