View Full Version : So is this a new standard?

So I jusr ordered my New brakes, Hayes Stroker Trail, 203 front 185 rear. And I was just noticing they come in peices and need to be bled once there installed, The Shimano Freestroke some the same way. Is this going to become the new standard way to send Hydraulic brakes??? Unbled and in peices, assembly required for all brakes??? One part of me likes this idea, one part of me does not.

Hmmm...don't think I like that.

Pre-bled all the way.

Yeah while I like the convenience of pre bled, but how many times are we getting systems that come with some air trapped in the lines and such, still torn wether or not I like the idea

Good point.

But I've had good luck with my pre-bled Avids feeling good out of the box. Maybe if they also came with a bleed kit...

I sure do like the looks of those new Stroker brakes tho.

That's one thing I loved about all the new sets of Hayes Mags I used to get.......come unassembled. That way you can have the perfect hose lengths AND have perfectly bled brakes right from the start. A whole hell of a lot better than having to trim lines or re-bleed crappy factory pre-assembled/bled brakes (coughcoughAVIDcoughcough).

I would, however, take a pre-assembled/bled Avid brake over an unassembled Hayes brake anyday.

I have already gotten to ride a set before I ordered them, and when they advertize that you forget about the breake lever, you really do. Great feel and i cant wait till Mine come in and I can get them installed. Will probably wait to install them untill after the series is over though, if I am going to break my gear, rather it be the old than the new. I will post a full reveiw after I have been riding them for awhile

I've always had to cut the lines on the pre-bleed brakes I've ordered anyhow so I don't mind at all, saves me a couple steps.

What are Shimano Freestrokes?

Are the Stroker's downhill worthy?? They do seem like a nice brake, but don't know if I would replace my mags with them.

Funny, best set I have personally had out of the box Is my current avid seven's...... All manf get a bad bleed now and then.

My J5's were actually fine, as were my J7's, but every set of Codes I've seen/installed on friends' bikes have needed to be bled right out of the box.

This is the only link I can find for them, but yes they are DH worthy.

I'm currently running the new Shimano XT brakes and they are pretty f*cking solid...this with a 6" rear and 7" front rotor. I'd imagine they'd be phenominal w/ 8"' rotors.

My Codes are still fine and I've had them for a year...I must have gotten the "good" set!!! :D

my juicy 7s are great out of the box so far, every set of codes i've heard of needed a bleed right out of the box, weird. i'm not a fan of this new "standard" of partially assembled brakes, it sounds like a pain, i'd much rather receive brakes that are ready to ride.

my codes were perfect out of the box (one got sent back on warrenty for a broken pad adjust knob, but the bleed was fine, and they sent me a brand new one with a good bleed)

bled them again and they still feel great.

And yes, the strokers are DH worthy. If it weren't for the creaky/weird ass lever feel, i'd be running them over my codes - almost as strong, and a whole lot more modulation. Plus, easier to setup. I think once I get my new pads (so I can run half organic half metallic) my codes will be better, but the strokers are rad. Props to hayes on a great affordable brake.

anyway, back on topic, first i've heard of them coming that way, but i'd be stoked if it became the new standard, given that i'm lazy as hell and i'd benefit from bleeding brakes as a habit when i got them (though i've been fairly lucky for my own brakes so far)

Isn't it just a new XT lever? There is a free stroke adjustment on the lever, but but I don't think it's a response to Hayes. I have a set on my DH bike(awesome).

man i wish none of them ever came assembled or bleed so i can tailored the lines to the bike better.

Yeah it may not be a responce to hayes, might be the other way around, but these two are going to be on top for quite a while, the Radial design master is going to change how we think about Mtn bike brakes. Imagine, setting your lever reach and never having to change it, till you change pads. I thought it was nice when I could make fine tune adjustments on my Sevens, but not having to adjust them at all!!!!!!!
