Headley is no doubt a fun trail, and a must do everytime you go up there... Definitley not my favorite though.. SOOO much more stuff to ride... Bee-Hive is in such good shape right now especially !

Seriously...that's gonna screw us all up. Why take lumber in? So that when a ranger who isn't in a good mood finds it, we can get banned?

It did take some patients to get it done but it was also relaxing. The weather was good, and we were able to get a number of runs in. I think that most riders do perfer behivee but it had been since the summer that most of us had been on headleys. The treated wood was a surpise to us and as being a local here I'm not sure who is bringing it in. Seeing stuff like that does concern me.

Nice footage, that trail is really fast at the bottom. I rode it some time in fall of 07 and I saw that board there but didn't hit it. It's kinda sketchy and it's right in the middle of some fast flow downhill turns

Sweet looking trail, we are definitely going to hit up Wilson's next time we're in NC.

I was also surprised to see someone had brought wood in the forest. Maybe (hopefully) they are unaware of the past issues?

There were reports, and evidence of a professional trail crew working all over the Wilson's Creek area of the forest. New bridges, drainage work, big trees being removed, some pretty advanced stuff (from a trail work perspective, not as in "stunts" of any kind). I noticed all kinds of drainage work done on both Greentown plunge and the climb out to Beehive. In addition they had cut some trees and laid them on the downslope of some caving in corners to catch further slides. There was some nice rock work done at the big rock on Greentown as well. It might have been done at that time...

Just saying, not all is a forest fire..

we were doing some timed "stuff" out there on xc bikes a few months ago and some dude from GA did the entire climb in a bit over 16 minutes....pretty intense.
as far as the trail work, there are several other things in the forest that I have noticed lately, it is a lot more than a couple people on bikes could do and is very well made and done correctly. I have a feeling that the fs was definitely involved with it, pretty cool.

Easy, butch.......the ramp has been there forever. Nobody knows who brought it in, nobody is has ever made a big deal about it until now. It's one tiny ramp over a fallen log......and it's been there for many seasons---hardly comprable to what the Hucksters were doing in a burned out forest. Let's not hit the panic button over what one video focused on for one short segment. The rangers probably have no problem with it because it's so insignificant and the fact that there has been no other attempts to replicate the ramp elsewhere along the whole trail. I agree the lone board doesn't look good on film, but unless you're willing to come down from Asheville to remove it yourself, I doubt anyone from the area is going to trouble themselves with it either. Plenty of people have had plenty of opportunities to take that thing out over the last few years and nobody has yet.......

I can see it now "Hey guys.....I know we're having a great time ripping this trail, but Butch said for someone to take this ramp out, so I'm just going to smash it so we'll have to stop for this big freakin' log the next time we come down."

....They would find my ashy, broken and bruised body 3 weeks later being eaten by a raccon like E.T. :biggrin:

Butch, just my opinion, take it as you will, but I would just leave well enough alone. If who ever is doing the work out there wants help Im sure they will let it be known.

And I havent posted in awhile, I read a little about this credit thing, it looks like I have -631 credits? How is it I started in the red?, or someone took me credits, can anyone tell me.

Yeah i'm with johnboy about just letting it be, I ride more miles out in wilsons more every week than most people on here do in a year or two and that board on headleys has been there a long long time and is off the side of the trail, and the little ramp has always been there, it has just been rebuilt, and whoever did rebuild it put some time and money into it. When i rode off of it 2 days ago, it seemed pretty stout. The other trail work was most likely coordinated through the fs since it seems that it was a major operation. I say everything should be left alone and we should just be appreciative that someone did some good quality and much needed work on some trails and leave it at that. I enjoyed being able to ride every bit of one trail this week that I have never been able to before because of a hike a bike over some logs, that has now turned into a pretty nice, well constructed, all naturally made bridge that is ridable. :clapping:

edit: I'm sure I'm going to get hated on for all this as usual, but I was just trying to help out. Regardless of how long a man-made "stunt" as the FS would call it exists, 3 things can happen:
1. Unapproved ramp becomes damaged and a rider gets injured...sues FS.
2. FS has never seen it, but will be upset when they see lumber at whatever point they find it...still bad for riders
3. Another rider sees ramp...builds more b/c they think it's acceptable there...they get in hot water with FS...

What you all hope for is that it never gets moved so you don't have to do anything. Not exactly the best stance in my humble opinion. I've been to Pisgah SORBA meetings and gotten to hear lots of things you guys never hear about from the FS. They're not nutty commy's looking to take your trails and take your freedom. They are good people...and it's their turf and they get really ticked off whether the public knows it or not.

You might never hear an FS employee say a thing about a non-traditional trail feature someone built, but they are aware of them and take legal routes to either allow or dis-allow those features without you or me having a say in it, until the public meeting is announced and hopefully you act appropriately through the right channels to keep your trail open.

I'm wanting to encourage ownership of Wilson's by all you guys lucky enough to ride there. If you want man-made things and what the FS labels 'TTF's', technical trail features...you can get them OK'ed. But that's only if you get involved with trail work and ask the right ways.

I'd love to see that area develop into a directional trail system that protects the interests of DH'ers and safeguards other trail users with proper signage acknowledging that on certain days..downhill use is the only use allowed. :D

Butch....man, you can really go out on a tangent. I think most people in the South forum are well aware of your stance on these things---and you're not lacking for any respect because of them.

C'mon, man....nobody here isn't talking about giving back, or not helping the trail crews, or not doing the right thing...seriously, two posts in response do not count as a majority. What we're trying to explain......just really simply, is that the little bridge has been there for years. If the FS---who is out there often--doesn't see a problem with it, why should anyone else? If they really thought it to be a problem, they would have either A.) removed it. or B.) cut out the fallen tree that it traverses over. I think anyone who has ridden that trail will tell you---take out the tree--it would make the trail much faster. But nobody in their right mind is going to go trapsing up there with a chainsaw...that really is a good way to get things to go bad.

I hate like hell that I've even gotten involved with this damn thread. Nobody's mind ever gets changed and it's just pointless to try and even explain the situation. I understand where you're coming from Butch, and it's not lost on me, but you also gotta know that people take real good care of the trails up there and it doesn't do any of us any good to start these point-your-finger-blame-games. No wonder people are reluctant to post anything up in the South forum....

Oh yeah, he's 45 years old, rides a 45+ pound GT DHi with a monster T and his low gear is 44X32. HE'S A MACHINE!

As far as us only hitting Lower Headleys, I believe the plan is to film a different trail each time we go up. I'm itch'n to get some footy of Beehive. In my opinion that is the best trail up there.

be sure to tell everyone to stay back and then ride down to the the creek first. You can film the pile up as they all come wedging in blind...you might get a random "lemming" on film. :D
