My hub no longer catches. I can spin the cranks either way and they spin freely.

What do you think the problem is?

The bike shop told me I needed a new cassette body or something.

How hard is it to buy one and install it myself?

Are there any special tools I would need?

Thanks for the help.

you need a new freehub body. To replace it (assuming you don't have a strange hub) you need to remove the rear axle and then there is a 12mm (or at least i think its 12) allen key that the axle went through. You just unscrew that and the freehub body comes right off

Ok that sounds within my abilities. :D
It is an xt hub.
Will I need to remove the cassette or anything?

yeah, the cassette cap actually screws into the freehub body, so If you're chnging the freehub, you're going to need to take off the cassette.
