Hey, need to buy a camera thats good for taking action shots, saw some good pics on here was wondering what cameras you using.
I want a small camera I can pop in my pocket.... dont care what make would prefer not to buy Sony as you have to use their memory cards. Ild like to keep to SD memory...
I tried this in a local shop:
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3
it had anti blur etc... and you could set the shutter speed...

Canon G7. Best for your buck.
The G7 is a fancypants Powershot. But really, any point and shoot will suck with action...some just less than others. I had good results with my Canon Powershot A620 and lots and lots of panning and delaying...and flashing.

i have the panasonic lumix dmc-lx1. i love this camera, sharp lense, 24mm-110mm, 16x9, full manual control, RAW, pocket-sized.
IMHO, it's the best pocket sized camera you can buy.

I second the choice for the panasonic lumix. Mines the DMC LX2 (newer version of lx1) The sweet part is ability to shoot photos and record mpegs in the 16:9 mode. With most new tvs and computer monitors this is cool. I use it alot for xc rides etc. Check out some shots from this camera in litter mag and decline. It works great in a pinch when you dont have or want to lug all your real photo gear along. It also comes in Black and has a Leica lens. In fact it is identical in every way to the more expensive Leica model.

IMO, if you want a digital SLR, $400-500 wont get you much that would be worth it. The body alone for my XTi cost me $600, lightly used. And I've spent another $1400 on lenses a flash and tripod/batteries and crap. And now I'm wishing I didnt buy the $350 "Walk around" 28-75 f/2.8 Tamron and saved up to get a 24-70mm f/2.8 Canon "L" (MUCH Better image quality, $1000).
Its one of those thing, where if you cheap out and start playing around, you want better things quick, and lose money by not getting them first.
(Sorta like if you're buying a bike, and you buy a low end bike to upgrade, then realize it was a waste of you're money, and buy a Sunday like everyone else in the world.)
Just my 2 cents though...to each his own.
EDIT: For the record, I vote for a Canon XT if you deside to just stick with the basics...XTi if you can find one.

You can get 10d and 20d bodies for less than what you paid for a new XTi, with grip and usually a kit lens or 50 1.8. Well within the users budget. Hell, 30d bodies are now going for about $850 usd. It is a buyers market for used SLRs.
I also suggest either the Lumix Sven posted, or a Canon SD1000. Either will work reasonably well for what you want to do. The lumix has a slight edge to do a better shutter lag time.

When I say used, I mean litterally 100 pictures on it. All original packaging and everything included, when I got it, it was a steal.

Folks if you want to get into photog be prepared to drop alot of money on good glass. If you are only wanting to get into it for $450 then that means you cant by lenses and all the extras you will need for dSLR. If thats your budget then rather get yourself a high end point and shoot that shoots raw and has a descent optical zoom on it.
Besides the Lumix which i mentioned before, Id recomend the Canon G9. Has nice 6 x optical lens.

you can pick up a 1d off of ebay with a low shutter count for pretty cheap, but on the other hand it is fully manual, not auto setting and you have to really learn everything, and that would teach you a lot. On the other hand it would prob. be better to pick up a 20D or 30D for an overall better camera.
My old 1d with crap glass on it.

Those types of sites likely arnt legit...
Stick to BHphoto.com or Adorama.com
And like I said, if you want become a photographer in the future, buying the bottom line stuff first really ends up being a waste, because you can hardly give away those lenses.
I was in the same boat as you in May of this year, let me see if I can find the forums I made on this subject...
EDIT: Check these post out I made awhile back, they should help alot...

The XTI is OK, we have that along with 3 other bodies at work. Its AWB seems weird. I also have 20 Ds and a NEW 1dn!!!! I would probably recommend looking for a local used 20D should be able to get for around $500! The 20 is a little better as far as AF speed and could save you some money buying used??

Its not to high end, but I just got a Pentax K100D Super SLR Camara. Love the thing. They have a $100 mail end rebate right now running till Jan. 08. You can pick one up online for around $499 to $530 with a 18-55mm Kit lens. This is a great starter camara in the SLR world. Once I get more into taking photos I will most likely buy a high end camara and lens with low F Stops.

just an FYI, 20d AF = XTi AF. The 20d/30d/XTi all share the same autofocus system, while the XT is quite a bit slower. will agree that the auto white balance on the XTi is a bit... off. Easily fixed in photoshop, but still. highly recommend either that or the 20d, both would be spectacular for your needs. then you just need to start accumulating glass...

i got a lumix tz-3 it works alright, you cant expect much from a small point and shoot. takes good video tho. the flash is way too small, mainly its too dark in the woods here in england.
and it has a manual shutter speed? i didn't know that. where?

Hey, yeah Im in Ireland so my cannon just doesnt do low light at all.
About the manual shutter speed, the guy in the shop, just set the shutter speed in a menu somewhere, and set the antiblur too....
I was reading elsewhere and others said there was no manual shutter speed so maybe I got the model wrong....
Anyway for racing pics are the riders blurry? you got any samples?

i just found the shutter thing, but its for slow shutter, not what you want for sports.
most of them are really crap, but i posted them up for the mtb club, everyone likes seeing photos no matter how crap they are.

this one is to prove that we were just riding too fast for the little camera to handle, the slower mt board guy turned out ok:

you really have to be up close to make the flash work. i have yet to try it where there is better lighting for sports stuff.

As long as your object is moving slowly you can get away with a point and shoot digi style cam.
If you want to take nice pics of fast moving objects then youll have to spend some extra cash.
A Canon EOS 400D is a good starters kit but im not sure if it has the same name in the US.
http://www.topdeals.nl/catalog/images/EOS400d.bmp
When your used to the camera you can allways buy some fancy pats glass but you better leanr how to operate the camera first.

sure, the lumix lx1/2 can be used as a point'n'shoot, but with full manual control, it can be used just like an SLR. the lx1/2 is actually pretty fast with minimal shutter lag.
if you want a digi-cam that you can toss in the pack and not worry about the bulk and weight of an SLR+gear, the lumix lx1/2 is the best option.
plus, the lumix lx1/2 can shoot 3 frames per second sequence shots:

in the US 400d = XTi. took some pics with it at the Reading race this year, then moved to a part of the US where everything goes *reallllly* slowly.

I've been using Kodak point and shoot digital cameras for about 3 years now and take a ton of photos for both mtn bike and snowbaord with them. Currently use a Kodak Z885, it's small, uses an SD card, has 8 megapixel resolution and is about $200. Best feature is the continuos shutter every 1/2 second.
Look for any ride report by amydalayna on here for some of the shots...

Thats what I thought after searching a bit but wasnt sure.
The XTi could have a slightly faster shuttertime compared to the same range Nikons but I find it to do the job well enough.
A good lens can do miracles but the most important thing is to know how everything works.
A digi photo class isnt a bad ID after purchasing a camera like this.
Do you shoot on AUTO or M?
