I'm not British but I can help out a little. In general places and names like the ones you pointed out are not English at all but are of Celtic origin (Breton, Cornish, Irish, Manx, Scottish Gaelic or Welsh). Here are some pronunciation guides for you to read if you're interested.

Irish: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/irish.htm
Welsh: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/welsh.htm
Scottish Gaelic: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/gaelic.htm
Cornish: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/cornish.htm
Manx: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/manx.htm
Breton: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/breton.htm

^ he got it covered.

wales got their own language. if you are even in north wales, here is an awesome drinking game. drink each time you see a ARAF sign on the road. araf mean slow in welsh. it also helps that you know farther ted, and say it in a fashion like Drink!!-ARF!!! awesome.
