Curious what the average lift ticket cost is nation wide for different resorts?
And if the average rider feels they get a good value at each resort?

For Bromont, yes. It was cheap, it wasn't 'groomed' like Whistler course but was a lot of fun, close to home (1 to 1.5 hour drive max from Montreal). Whistler is massive compared to Bromont, which is great, but I knew I was paying for the fact I was in "Whistler."

2007 was $229 for a season pass@NorthStar. Rumor has it next year its supposed to go up.

I paid $400 cdn for a season pass at Whistler. 17 days later, that was $23.50 a day. That seemed alright, but still a tad pricey.
Northstar is a fvcking rip off at $39 or whatever a day. We went to Tahoe, realized how expensive N* was gonna be, then went and rode all kinds of XC trails for free. Northstar is truly a rip off.
I'd pay no more than $25 a day for a good resort. And I'd still be pissed that I'm spending $25 just to ride my bike.

Seems like most are about $30 these days .
Some resorts don't have as many trails or features to make it "worth it".
However, once you look at escalating fuel costs for a shuttle truck the $30 or so for a day or resort riding kinda doesn't seem so absurd.

Lifts? What are those?
If you want a lift around here you have to put a jack under your ass.
But honestly, I think the price should depend on what you are offering.
For example, Sugar here charges $20 for an all day pass.
But they have a AA battery powered lift, and basically 1 1/2 trails down from the top. Therefore, nobody goes there.
When I go to places like Diablo and Snowshoe, their lift ticket is a little more, but their sick trail networks make it all worth it. Either place you can get in enough runs to ride yourself silly, and that is always worth every penny.
That's why resorts aren't worth the prices they are asking.
Nothing wrong with ripping singletrack rides for free.
The singletrack doesn't need to pay a seven-digit insurance premium.
Plus, any of the resorts that can successfully charge >$25 have trails crews that build features and maintain everything.
To add to the OP's question, Diablo daily tickets are $34, and a season passes vary from $275-$329 depending on how early before the season you buy it. Also, I was there 8 times, w/o a pass unfortunately, but would still say it is quite worth it. All the trails are fun. They groom constantly and leafblow almost everyday from what I can gather. Plus, they do have quite a few man-made features and are always building new trails. I'd say its worth the money when you can see how they use it to keep making the place better each year.

I would have no problem in paying $35-45 for a resort like whistler. There isn't anything that compares on the East Coast. I think resorts like Snowshoe could charge more and would have better attendance if they had a couple of A-Line type trails. People don't belive that. However, go to Diablo or Whistler and look what people are riding. I like to ride the harder trails but when your tired, it's nice to be able to ride cruiser runs to get your money's worth.
For me, the expense of riding is the gas to get to a place and lodging. I have less of a problem paying for a higher priced lift ticket if the experience is good.

You beat me to it. After snowboarding all winter, $40 for a day of downhill would still seem reasonable to me. Most resorts I've been to average around $30-35.
I have never felt ripped off by any of the resorts listed here and would pay up to $40 to ride most of them. Except for one or two, I don't think they charge enough.
I appreciate the advantage of season passes and on average buy (or work exchange) two per season.
Though I also enjoy hiking 30min to 2 hours for descent, I'm extremely grateful to the resorts who open their lifts and trails for our enjoyment.

My thoughts exactly. Looked at killington's site this week and its almost $80 for a day pass on a sat.
100 dollar season pass at Bromont is mint. With the frequency we go, its only probably 5-6 dollars a trip, maximum. At around 1.5 hours with a stop its not too bad on gas.
The other mountains around here (whiteface, sugarbush, bolton valley) are all closer (whiteface is around 90mins, sugarbush is about 50mins, bolton is about 20 minutes) are closer but no where near as good. They are all 30-40 for a day, but we only go there when we get bored or just want to switch it up.

I guess, having paid the $359cdn for a Whistler season's pass, and gotten 15 or so days in, yeah, it doesn't represent BAD value for money. The thing that puts me off buying one for next year though is that the Garbanzo zone is pretty much decimated right now. I got pretty bored riding the lower mountain this year, and until they're done with all the olympic construction I suspect they're unlikely to open up any new trails at the top of the hill. Having ridden Garbanzo when there was more options I sort of feel short-changed paying the same price for a ticket.
However, I say this now, but I suspect by the time June rolls around and there's talk of the mountain re-opening it's doors for the summer, I'll be somewhere near the front of the queue! I'm weak...
Big Bear in SoCal charges $20.00 for all day pass to ride the trails 'off the mountain'. I think Mammoth was $37.00/day to ride blown out pumice trails. If we had a decent mountain with decent trails here I'd have no problem buying a seasons pass for ~$300.

The places that I ride on the east have all ready been listed (Highland, Jiminy, Attitash). I can't see ever complaining about getting my moneys worth. As people have said, being a skier I would die for the summer ticket prices.
The other thing to consider is the lift lines which are also a fraction of what is faced in the winter. If people are complaining about prices than maybe they realistically can not afford the sport. I would like a snowmobile, dirtbike and new boat but i am not going to complain about their prices.

In general it seems most people are okay with the price of lift access but this is a very good point for those who are not.

Bromont passes can be had for even cheaper then the $99 if you buy a ski/ride pass also. Got a killer deal on my winter and summer pass at the end of last ski season. Bike pass ended up being less then $99 with a really good deal on the snow pass for this coming season.
Bromont really offers great deals on passes in an effort to get people out to the hill. They're going a great job in my eyes.

Actually Diablo is $34 for a full day pass and only $27 for a half-day pass. A 2008 Season Pass for Diablo is $329, but if you are one of the first 50 people or so to buy one you can get an early bird discount of $50... so it's only $279.

That’s partly why we moved away from Bro Cal. No more lift accessed riding, excessive traffic, concrete and ridiculous housing prices. But there is a downside. Snow in winter. And it does get dusty here in the summers.

They put a TON of work in before the season opened this year, and started to close certain trails in the rain so as to not allow them to deteriorate (the ones that hadn't been fixed). The end of the season has seen a ton of work cleaning up and rebuilding old trails, as well as the construction of some new trails as well. Presumably most of the latter part of the work is in preparation for the upcoming world cup.

thanks guys for the good comments...
on the last 2-3 weekends we worked a bit less on the regular downhill trails to focuss more on the world cup track, it is now almost complete (still needs some touch ups in some parts and finishing touches) the track is gonna be pretty fast, 2-3 technical sections but nothing stupid like the old "flinstones" section they had 4-5 years ago. The track is probably gonna get used for the quebec/canada cup in may of 2008 too. (some sections will be different though)
the "versant du lac" (the side of the mountain where the wc track is) is in a complete expansion, more trails are planned for next summer and the trails that are going to be built there are different from the regular trails, less rocky, rooty, off-cambery trails, more fast and flowy stuff. 2008 will mark new additions and new sections on some of the regular trails too...
2008 will be nice...

Worth it? Hell yes. Lift-assisted riding never fails to deliver for me, pretty much regardless of conditions, and unless I make a trip pretty far away to whistler or elsewhere, the only lift-assisted riding I get is at Northstar. After it was closed two seasons ago, I decided that I'd pay as much as the skiers pay in winter, even if operating costs are lower in the summer. I'd rather have a place to ride than bitch about the cost. Fact is, until there is more competition I'll probably keep paying whatever they charge. And I suspect they know it.

Seconded. The alternative to the lift is to go ride free trails, which is still riding a bike. Unless the trails have been sculpted into something spectacular, I wouldn't want to pay much anyways.
Skiing isn't quite the same thing. Hiking up a mountain in deep snow while wearing ski boots really limits the amount of skiing one can do in a day. The up-the-hill/down-the-hill time ratio is gigantic. The up-hill/down-hill time ratio in liftless mountain biking is several orders of magnitude smaller. Plus, if we postulate that riding a bike is good, well, one is still riding a bike even when heading uphill.

I ride free trails all the time... on my XC bike. When I want to go downhill fast, I'll happily pay for the privilege of a quick way back to the top.
My ride time is limited by family, work, mtb advocacy, trailbuilding, etc., so I don't have an endless number of long days to shuttle and push up. Paying $25-35/day is perfectly reasonable for a lift plus trails that someone else has to maintain. Getting home from a half-day of lift-served riding before my son wakes up from his afternoon nap is PRICELESS.
