So my fancypants new machine is running, but surprise surprise, something doesn't work (Woot Windows!). I can't get a DVD to play. Tried both WMP 11 and MPC with the free XP Codec pack installed...this be the WMP error message:

Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.

GPU drivers all current...

MPC error:

DVD: Copy-Protect Fail

Waawaaawheewaa? Uninstalled and reinstalled codecs, no bueno...

Is the region on the drive set correctly?

Is the region on the drive set correctly?

Yep, region 1...also updated the drive's (ASUS) firmware.

This makes me sad. I wanted to watch movies on a monitor bigger than my TV :(

See the last post.

You could try downloading VLC as well. VLC seems to be able to play anything, even problematic discs.

XP used to have to DL a dvd playback kit for windows media, but i am sure that has long been bundled into a SP? Maybe not...

BTW, SP2 for XP fixes some DVD issues so if you don't have it, get it.

Yeah - all updates are current, SP2 etc...I'll try VLC. It kicked ass on my Mac.
