That Merlin is gorgeous! I've never had a Ti bike. I kind of held out hope that I'd come up on a nice, used Ti frame for my winter/rain bike, but I managed to score something pretty sweet from a foreign colleague. I'll post pics of that when I get it.

What wheels are on the Merlin?

Love the Ridley too, love how dirty it is. What chainring combo are you running?

My first real road bike, 2008 CAAD9 R5. I was going to get it in white but then the store called and said white frames wouldn't ship until Oct. 20th - and raw is the new white, right?

I will snap shots of my roadie tomorrow.

I think it's alloy with carbon rear stays, and a carbon fork, yes?
I love my Giant hardtail that's built the same way, so that CX bike must ride amazingly.

Oops - Yeah it's aluminum with carbon stays. I don't know if it's the squarish tubes, but it rides really nice. I rode my roadie for the first time for more than 20 miles today, and I missed the CX bike. I have been having fun on knobbies on the road this fall.

I would agree with all said points. Problem is that cranks are about the last thing that would wear out on this bike, and I'm not likely to feel the need to upgrade them any time soon.

I went direct, it's slightly custom - has a longer top tube than stock geometry. It's at least 8 years old so I've gotten my money's worth for sure.

Only two issues: A decidedly lighter wallet and being spoiled for all other cranks. :D

They are killer. Lighter and stiffer than anything I've spun. I thought I noticed a big difference when I went from my campy records to FSA ISIS carbon a couple years ago. The difference was even bigger when I went from the FSA's to these. Plus, super easy to install.

Yeah, they're pretty damn hot cranks. Did you get the one with the ti BB?
I ask if you had any problems only because I'd heard there were some issues with the tabs for the chainring bolts shearing. So just curious really.

Built with Record? Any more pics? I love those bikes, a great steel road bike. What pedals are on there?

Yes, ti bb. On the shearing issue, the guy who sold me the crank (a friend who owns a high-end shop) told me it's because people let the chainring bolts loosen up. Apparently they come loose easily, and the little carbon tabs are not up to the task of supporting the torque unless the bolts are tight. I was careful to use a little blue loctite and to check the bolts during and after the first few hard rides. No problems so far.

Yes, it was originally a full record kit with open pros, I eventually upgraded the wheels and cranks. The pedals are shimano 759 mtb. I try to keep my gear versatile between road and mtb and don't want a pair of dedicated road shoes. The rest of it is pretty standard fare: wtb stem, salsa bar, campy ti post, michelin tires, etc. Sorry, no more pics.

And sorry for the banter. To keep this sort of on track as a photo thread, here's a pic I took when I turned around after taking that pic of my bike. (Crappy view eh? I live somewhere in the upper right corner of the pic.)

That's pretty much what I figured. People don't take any responsibility for their stuff, and think they can treat the super-high end stuff the same as their 105. I looked long at hard at those cranks, then ended up somewhere I couldn't use them, so I'm glad I didn't go through with the purchase.

It's a sweet rig. Have you ridden with road-specific shoes though? I hear ya on running the same stuff in both disciplines, but I think road shoes make such a big difference in the ride and comfort.
But to each their own, I'm a bit spoiled on the shoe side of things...

She's nothing special, just an off-the-shelf Roubaix, but it's my intro to tarmac. Ignore the platforms, they were sitting on my workbench when I brought the bike home and wanted to take it for a spin around the block.

Thanks! Yeah I have tried road shoes and while I agree they make a difference (1) modern mtb shoes are pretty damn good; (2) roughly half the rides I do on this bike involve getting in and out of train stations or other walking, and mtb shoes are way better for that; and (3) seeing as I ride everything from DH to road, I've got enough gear needs as it is!

Ok, again to stay on topic, here's a bad pic of my fixie:

My Kelly CX, bought shortly before he closed the doors. Glad I got in on this, cause its a great riding bike. Fits my gangly body quite well to boot. Parts is Campy Centuar 10 w/Dura Ace 177.5 cranks. It sports knobbies most of the time since many of my rides involve some form of gravel at some point. If I do run smoothies, they don't get any skinnier than 28's. I like me the big rubber!

Thanks LO - Kelly's I think are most known for the 'cross bikes. They're kinda unique. More of an American 'crosser than a euro one. Difference I guess is mostly in the the tire clearance department. I can fit 1.9's on the front, and up to 42c in the rear. LOTS of room for big tires. This frame also works best with mountain cranks. I had to use an Ultegra triple BB to get the DA cranks to work. For being a 61cm frame, the bike also ended up being fairly light at just over 21lbs. True Temper OX Platinum tubing counts for that one I think.

I break the plastic thing into smaller pieces with a wire cutter and pull each segment out or something.

As for bar angle, sorry, that's subjective. I like mine with the hoods rotated further back towards the saddle as I use 'em as a psuedo-aerobars. Others like them rotated the other way, umm, for their reasons.

use your chain whip with a cog tool to remove the rear cog. then just slide off the plastic piece. as far as bar placement, like Opie said, it's all subjective to you. i think the stack height is a bit high, but you may not have dialed in the fit just yet. that being said, don't let anyone tell you you must have your stem flipped. if it works the way it is, great! some people say it for asthetics. i say fvck that!!

nice looking ride, hope you enjoy it.

I do feel like the hoods are too far away. It feels alright in hard climbing, but at a normal cadence on flat-ish ground, I'm way more comfortable on the bars next to the stem than I am on the hoods.

What's the hot stem for road bikes? Thomson? Never touched the Thomson on my Cove.

DRB, Igloo?

DRB, Igloo?

Everybody in Alaska lives in an igloo.

As for the stem....

Alaska, MD...the sailing capital! You'd think the icebergs would make all the sailors pick a different city to call home, but they're all drunk, so...

The Ritchey looks nice in white.

that Ritchie stem would look good on that bike

I just made some upgrades and component changes, so I figured I should take a picture. Swapped the stem, wheels, cranks, cassette, chain, rear derailleur, seatbag and pump in the last week. New front derailleur coming soon to improve the shifting with the new cranks (went from standard triple to 50-36 compact and a 12-25 cassette to a 11-23). Bike feels a bit wacky with all the changes, but seems like everything is working so far.

Has the new road wheels on it now, but I have a pair of Ultegra/Open Pros with Maxxis Raze tires on for trails and such.

Awesome! You don't see a lot of Empellas around, that's for sure.
No matching brakes! :)

Awesome and Euro!

Thanks! I wouldn't mind matching brakes, but it's hard enough to get them to not squeel like crazy even with brakes I can actually adjust.

Love this bike. I've had it for maybe 5 years. Stiff as hell (especially with the aluminum fork...) but feels good on road and trails.

As a side note, the bike looks way better with these new wheels than with the old hoops. With this frame, the more logos/decals the better.

Just finished building a commuting bike for my buddy Kenny. He splits his time between Brooklyn and Vegas, so a Fixie was out of the question (got to keep ahead of the trends...)

That's one baaaaaad bike right there.

Not that I'm one to knock style points, but why the e-thirteen bash guard?? Bumhopping got tough on chainrings lately?

I do think it wouldn't look complete without it....fwiw.

If you have a case of 110 bcd Superchargers, what else ya going to do with them? That bike is running an inner stop and outer plate system for chain retention. I could have likely thrown something else on there, I suppose.

I think we are just building frames for the team and a few really special dealers. Otherwise, we won't be able to ship the frames until October.... We are trying to hussle it up.....

Or maybe not....

Sweet rig Sus-sus-SuspectDevice! I am building something like that right now using a Surly CC frame and a couple mtb/bmx parts. I'm using the same pedals, lite shyt right there.

After some tweaks and changes, the re-built 585 Ultra.
I had SRAM Force on there, but my other bikes have DA, so I didn't really want to be switching back and forth, so I took the Force off.
I think this bike has every EC90 part that Easton makes, and it's super-light. My Colnago feels like a tank compared to this thing! TRP's new machined brakes, still dual-pivot, so far they feel pretty decent, but time will tell.
The parts are living here for now, but will eventually be swapped over to a Colnago CX-1 once they become available.
Anyone want to buy a never-used Force kit? ;)

Awesome ride stink... I'm sure you'll drive James into something even newer and more extravagant. ;)

Now get the tire labels lined up with the valves, n00b.

I expect better from you ire. Strip the tires and get it right.

Fact: This doesn't matter if you spend more time riding your bike than looking at it.

Kind of hard to do with tubulars though, is the only thing...

And yes, dammit, now I need to go out and spend like $10,000 building a super-sick CX bike or something!
:)
No new bikes for me for a little bit, but I have some new parts of one of them, I'll post it up later this week...
