I just wanted to formally thank them for allowing us to make 2% margins on your product. Thank you.

sad to say but I have lost all respect and luster for campy.

Not sure what you're talking about but I still like Campy better than SRAM or Shimano. The ergonomics alone are enough for me, but then there is the fact that my Record 10 stuff is at least 7 years old and has been totally solid, not one problem with anything. Dura Ace would be worn and sloppy and I probably would have had to replace the shifters by now.

I like Campy well. I don't like that they allow product to be sold so the IBDs must operate at a 9% margin. Yup, that's the real number on a set of Record UD cranks. Crazy.

I don't get it... more information please. :)

Maybe you should try selling shoes, my current YTD GP is 43% which is par for the retail end of things.

I don't think it's right to divulge the costs, but suffice it to say that with one of my better deals, I yield less than 10%, which makes it impossible to want to handle. I like the stuff, but high end product that yields little to no margin makes no sense.

I'm confused. Who do you buy Campy from?

QBP or J & B. I guess I could get it from Oshner's as well.

Suggestions???

I don't know enough about the business side of things... I do know that we charge $427 for record shifters, which is a lot more that 9%. Record UT gets around 25%.

Which shoes?

Nike, Rebok, Adidas, Rockport, Florsheim, Clarks, Bostonian and most national brands are in the high 20s, house brands in the high 50's together yield 47%

Seriously. My cost at QBP is more for a Chorus cassette than Colorado Cyclist is selling them for.

You need a new supplier or higher volume... my LBS was able to buy all my campy - a full chorus 10 speed kit, drive train, shifters, wheel set (hubs), seat post, ergo brain, BB, and pedals. We worked the numbers to a 30% margin and I paid the shipping. The deal was LESS than colo cyclist and I got my build thrown in. I am pretty sure most of the kit was ordered from quality.

Not own, but manage. I've shopped online plenty as well, but these numbers are insane to me.

QBP gives some rebates at year's end, but the price is just that. I think the Euro has some huge bearing on things right now though. I would have to defer to Just James to see what he thinks, but that's my speculation.

SM - your kit could've been purchased through an OEM supplier. that's who our kits come from. prices are a lot cheaper...and the more your buyer orders, the cheaper he gets the parts for.

our list price for Record UT is $740.

I could stomach $740. $549 is tough to do though. :greedy:

Thats possible but I am fairly certain its was quality.

If I remember right - the Campy Chorus Kits came in 3 levels. Complete kit, drive train only and mechanicals without a bar, stem or seat post.

I was able to trade down campy bars and stem in order to bring it in under my budget.

We get better markup than 10% on Hi end campy stuff, but the last sho i was at was teh same way. We normally get our campy stuff from trek and Specialized and get a much better deal, saving quality as a last resort order. Low margins such, personally if you cant get at least 25% margin it isnt worth your time

The Euro is HAMMERING us this year, it's f'n horrible; our margins went in the toilet. We lock our currency conversion in at the beginning of our selling season, and take adjustments at the end of the year. Just about all of the people we deal with are in Europe, so we pay in Euros for most of it obviously. That's part of it, and another part is the convoluted discount structure of a lot of places.
Obviously the buying level has a lot to do with it. I came to the startling revelation the other month that to buy a complete Ultegra-equipped bike from one of our vendors costs me about $100 more than just buying the frame, and an Ultegra kit. No wheels, no bar/stem/saddle, etc. So on that model we're bringing the completes in. On Campy bikes we can afford to build them in house, plus it saves on duty.
Plus if you're buying stuff from an OEM place, that place is paying less duty on the items, so maybe they're passing the savings along to you. With a lot of the Italian stuff people are just used to paying more for it, on the retail, wholesale, and OEM levels.

I am perfectly happy with my FSA kits and dura-ace stuff untill the smoke settles.

maybe then when there isnt so much drama, I get my stuff discounted anyways, I cant through campy.

Dura Ace works so amazingly well, it's hard not to be happy with it. Actually, a Campy bike is the one thing missing from my stable, I've never had one. It'd be nice though.
Next bike will be something I'm not afraid to get wet/dirty/ride in the crap, with Ultegra.

You are a much luckier man than I. Maybe one of these days when I have a bit more riding under my belt we can hook up for a ride...but with clothes.
Talk about a derailed thread.

No, I know that, but it sounds like from his posts that he's able to go out and do a lot of exciting things. Riding with the Wounded Warriers, etc, I have a lot of respect for that.
Pretty much no matter what I write here it's going to sound trite, he was over there risking life and limb while I was sitting here polishing my bikes. So thank you.
But I do wish I had more time to ride.

Yeah, I know. We're getting to the slower part of the year, so I'll have more time. Have some great cold-weather riding gear too.
I find that the closer you work with bikes, the less time you have time to ride.
As soon as some stuff settles down at work, which it would soon, I'll have more time. Lunch rides, the works.

Speaking of DA, I was amazed at the difference in feel between the Ultegra stuff. Ult is pretty nice, but the DA just has that amazing feel to it. I don't think I have enough time on Record to really say anything about them. The Force I'm still coming to terms with. The rear brake has some cable drag in the housing, so kinda feels like garbage right now.

before running your lines put dry teflon powder in the housing and sift it back and forth then empty it out into the other ones and so on. works awsome for years.

I also like DA for use with the flight deck. the integration is awesome when you dont have to move your hands for anything

I'll have to try that out, thanks for the advice. I think it was partially the wheel that was on there, when I swapped it to another one, I think it was a bit thinner, the lever feel improved a bit.
