Reading about the incident in Jena I wonder how things like this could have been avoided. I went to a high school with really high racial tensions, mainly between black and hispanic students and I know how fast these situations can get out of hand.
Seems like the mistake was made initially by supernintendo Roy Breithaupt for not following the suggestion of the high school principal. The principal was pushing for an expulsion of the students who hung the noose. I would imagine that the principal understands the racially charged environment in the school, if I were him I would send a really strong message that these things would not be tolerated.
Just the notion that black students felt the need to ask the school administrators if they could also sit under the oak tree where white students usually sit should tell you that you need to be on high alert. Have open forums for discussion and make sure that students know that racially motivated actions, incidents, fights, ect. will not be tolerated. I am sure that this was not the first telling sign of a bubbling racial issue at the school. Also, if the school is plagued by racial issues I would bet my lunch money it comes from the same issues seen in everyday life around the little town. That was probably the tip of the iceberg.

"Three high school students were identified to be the culprits in this hate crime and a high school principal recommended that they be expelled. Roy Breithaupt, a White school superintendent, was against that idea though. He claimed that the nooses were just a juvenile stunt and instead suspended the boys for three days but no further punishment was given."
After this all hell broke loose with fights and angry parents. Then the ever so sculpted and articulate quote from the DA....I would really like to see or hear the whole conversation to see what context it was used in...but really...
same article as above
LaSalle Parish's district attorney, Reed Walters, stated that if Black students didn't stop complaining about the "innocent prank, I can be your best friend or your worst enemy. I can take away your lives with a stroke of my pen."
After all this everything snowballed and on one end you have the Vulture Jackson and Parasite Sharpton crying due to the harsh sentencing of Bell, and the racial downplayers saying that people shouldn't be angry because Bell got what he deserved and it has nothing to do with race.
I think it has everything to do with race. The whole situation started due to a racially motivated incident. I am not sure if the DA's actions to charge Bell with such aggressive charges were racially motivated, maybe he was trying to retroactively put a bad situation to rest. Maybe he is a racist bastard who was just waiting to make an example out the fist "colored boy who doesn't know his place".
I guess what I am trying to say is Bell should have been charged, maybe not with attempted murder, but definitely with some type of assault. But if you charge him, expel fools who like to play with ropes and knots, charge the kid who is too much of a pussy to throw a punch so he uses a bottle, and the kid who pulls empty shotguns on people.
The DA set himself up for all the fire he is taking, either he is really racist or really stupid.
