Recently, the French Foreign Minister, Bernard Kouchner, said that not only should Europe be prepared to go after Iran outside the framework of U.N. sanctions, but it should also prepare itself “for the worst.” When asked what he meant, his reply, “That is war, sir.”
Couple this with new French deployments into Afghanistan and their proposal to rejoin the military arm of NATO, we might be looking at a power shift in Europe, from Germany (Merkel) to France (Sarkozy) and a much more assertive and militarily active France (Perhaps even the EU and NATO?). In any event, this will definitely improve relations with the US (which ironically, might actually isolate France around the world).
