My buddy blew out his Van R rear shock and we are trying to find a good affordable rear shock to replace it ($200-300ish). To be honest, I don't know the stroke length, etc. He wants to lighten up the bike, ride it more freeride than just straight up DH, but most likely w/the price range he can't be that finicky. Any help, opinions, or asshole comments would be appreciated.

Hi, I'm from the "asshole comment" department.
You should tell your buddy that he should, instead of replacing the shock on his RM7, replace the frame. Then the shock.

Yeah I'd say sell the frame but if you must, look used.
Nice avatar picture, that drop and the whole trail are so much fun and that is the best trail I've ridden.

If you're gonna stay with the frame, I would not get an air shock even though you could easily get one. Those frames have a really high leverage ratio and I'd be afraid of killing it. A DHX coil, newer Fox RC or something similar would work fine.

Yeah An RM7 has a 3.5-1 ratio, it is quite hard on any shock.
