How do you get the broken bit out of the derailure?

Note: There is nothing that is sticking out to grab onto.

Thanks for your help.

You need a small easy out. Any good hardware store will have them. Looks kinda like a drill bit. Looks like they took a tappered square rod and twisted it. They have a reverse spiral on them. You simply insert it into the hole and as you undo it it the spirals bite into the barrel adjuster. With a mangled bolt, you need to drill a small hole first. Every tool box should have a few of these.

Thanks OldFart, I'll take a look for it.

just hammer a small allen wrench into it works all the time

Use a hacksaw to cut a slice into it.
Yeah you'll hit the der a bit, but won't do no lasting harm.

Then use a small flathead screwdriver to unsrew it.

Easy easy not even enough to break a sweat.

Thanks for all the help. I tried the allen key and few other items. But here is what worked and worked beautifully...

Use an old 1 inch wood drill bit, the kind with the tapered point that helps line up a hole.

- Tap it into the broken bit of the barrel adjuster with a hammer.
- Turn counter clockwise
Result - the sharp edge will bite into the barrel adjuster and allow it to be threaded out.

Like that...

You could get a set of small left-hand twist drill bits. Instead of using a true extractor, these work well on small screws. Just reverse your drill and drill one of these bits in...as it goes in, it will tend to turn the screw counterclockwise and extract it from the hole. It's simpler than using a bolt extractor, IMHO, for such a small screw.

I'm pretty sure he means he used a paddle bit (for drilling large holes in wood) to get it out, not a LH drill bit.

No, I mean a left-hand twist drill bit!

I don't own any, but the guy who used to help me with wrenching when I lived in 29 Palms did. We used those bits to extract a piece of a Marzocchi foot nut that was stuck in the pumping rod. I wan't aware they were so hard to find...I was going to check the Home Depot for some next time I was there!
