Saturday started out to be a beautiful day, sunny, warm but not hot, trails were tacky for the most part, but a few slippery spots around. It was around noon, and I had about five runs in already. Hit the RTN drop for the first, the deck drop a few times, also a first, and was basically felling really good on the bike.
On what would be my 3rd or 4th run down Victory, my riding buddy Chris and I hit traffic. Two riders ahead of us were down on lower Victory and Chris had to lay it over to avoid them. After the traffic cleared, Chris took off, and I followed as soon as he crossed the bridge. With no traffic and a clear run out, I was cruising brakes off until I got a little off my line to the left. I grabbed too much brake, slid further left, and made the classic mistake of focusing on where I didn't want to go instead of where I did. I don't know exactly what I hit that threw me off the bike, but next thing I knew I was in the air and hit something really hard with my head. I was upside down with an ankle stuck up in a small tree, and had blood running down my face. I laid there for a bit thinking sombody would be right along to help me up, but nobody came by so I pulled myself up and somehow managed to walk myself and my bike to the shed by the Dom's Denial drop.
I sat down in the shade by that shed and flagged down the next two riders that came through. I forget your names, but thanks for your help! One of the riders went for help, the other stayed with me. Two more riders came by, on with gauze pads and the other with a cell phone. Thanks to you guys as well. That gauze was much appreciated.
As everyone could see, my face was f'ed. I hit the rock just right, and it managed to cut me open to the bone across the bridge of my nose. I had a compound fracture and needed 30 stitches to put me back together. Luckily, no other damage, just an f'ed nose.
Thanks to everyone who helped me. I don't remember anyone's name, but I do remember a few faces. Thanks to the Diablo crew for picking me up and taking care of things until the ambulance got there. Thanks to the EMT's, and to the Doctors and Nurses and Sussex Hospital.
Diablo runs a top notch operation, and I'll be back again as soon as I'm healed up.
See you all again soon.
