I removed my rear wheel yesterday so i could give the brake disc a good clean and the calipers, on re fitting i noticed that trying to do up the lever it is very tough, is this correct? i actually needed to use the head of a hammer to help me push it down. does anybody have a guide to doing it back up correctly, i dont want my wheel to come off when riding down the trials, its seems ok and isnt coming off when i lift up the bike etc but thought i would ask you guys
sorry for the essay thanks for any help.

What I do to make sure its on strait is to push on the lever while the tire is spinning. As tight as I can is how tight mine are.

Most levers (Shimano) have a cam action that gets tighter as the lever closes. Tighten the skewer until the lever "catches" or just starts to show resistance when it is straight out then push it closed with the heel of your hand. It should just leave an imprint on your palm but not be so hard to close it requires a hammer.
Make sure the lever is pointed back or up behind your fork leg so it doesn't get flicked open on something.

first off.. quit apologizing.. this is RideMonkey, pissing people off is considered sport here.
As far as the QR levers go, I always hold the lever straight out and turn the nut on the other side untill it catches. Then push the lever with your palm just like dartman sez. Hittin with a hammer is a :disgust1:
There should be just enough tension near the very end so that to get the lever the last little bit over, you have to lightly pound with the heel of your hand. I tend to make my QR's a little tight just to make sure I don't lose a wheel when I take a drop.

Shouldn't have to pound it with the heel of your hand. That's verging of damaging things, including nerves in your hand.

by pounding, I mean gentle pursuasion. It's not like I'm full on wailing away on it. Hangela and Palmala have to be treated gently cuz they need to be able to hold on to the handlebars.
