So I'm trying to plan a trip up north for a few days.

First of all, it's either Mammoth or N*. I've ridden Mammoth a few times and I really like a few of the trails, but it does get a bit old. I've never been to Tahoe but the pics look great.

If N* is worth it, where have you guys stayed? Any other info?

As far as trails, what is offered as far as terrain? To compare, Velocity and Bullet are some favorites from Mammoth.

Usually at my house.

You down with camping? Plenty of options there. Boreal Inn up on donner pass usually has cheap summer rates if you want a hotel room.

Northstar's new trails are good......and if all goes as planned will keep getting better throughout the summer.

I personally love velocity and bullet too.......but it's work to get to bullet and to be honest those are the only trails that stand out there in my mind.

You'll keep yourself entertained at northstar. Plus all the dh trails are easily accessible from a lift......none of this 5-10 ride to the trails like at mammoth.

Just bring extra rotors, derailleur hangers and derailleurs.:)

I'm loving the look of the trails, so it looks like it's going down.

How far is the Boreal? Camping is out, we want a kitchen too soooo the Inn is out.

Has anyone stayed in a condo or suite at N*?

BTW Kidwoo you're on the trail crew, correct? I'm loving the looks of the jumps as opposed to the decrepit piles of sand Mammoth calls X-zones.

I've been working part time on weekends......nothing to do with the livewire jumps though......that's the full time guys (who have been busting their asses).

I mostly worked (am working) on boondocks. Hopefully we'll have some of the stuff done we want to do by the time you get here.

Coolio, I'd be up in mid August.

Yup, several times. They're very nice, they're a 2-minute bike ride from the lifts, and you get free lift tickets, which is nice. However, they're really pricey. Every time I've stayed in one of those condos, I've crammed me plus at least eight other people in there just to make it affordable.

Yeah, they don't seem cheap. Is there anything privately owned close? What "neighborhood" would I want to look in? I ask because I've scored cheap condos at Mammoth from people just looking to make a few bucks in the summer.

Ok seriously, I've stayed in the condos and it's a great way to go if you don't mind dropping the coin.

The jumps are good and bound to get better, but it ain't whistler. For me Northstar is all about super loose and rocky trails with lots of dust, drifting turns and trying to say upright in the land of limited traction. Completely different from the tacky goodness I normally ride. There are a few wooden stunts around and some rocky obstacles, with more to come. Also, some drops to flat. There is a lot of work in progress so there may be more ridable stuff when you make it there. Check out the "Northstar reports here" thread in the Norcal/Bay area forum.

Compared to Mammoth N* looks like tacky dirt to me!

Damn it.

Nah if you can handle the loosest sections of chainsmoke, bullet and velocity, you'll be fine.;)

Like mammoth, it comes in sections. Not everything is that bad.

KIDWOO....... I'll be there for the July 29th Race. Will there be camping in the parking lot? What about camping near the lake, that way we can cool off after? Where should I, and do they still have room? Thanks

I'm not sure if it's ghetto or not, but this weekend we're camping at the Sandy Beaches campground in kings beach. Looking at maps, it looks like a 15 min drive to N*. It was $20 a night, and they've got showers and access to the lake... so far so good. I'll let you guys know how it is when I get back.

Only problem I see with camping is if there's rain it'd blow and having to store the bikes in a not-so-secure area wouldn't be great.

Let me know how it is though, it's definitely an option.

Get ready to have black boogers.

Been there twice, loved it. If you have little bikes, go ride XC, that's where the real goods are at at Tahoe (everywhere).

No little bikes here, I wish though. The XC trails look awesome.

Hahaha, yeah you could say that again. I went up during opening weekend and was blowing black cr*p out of my nose for 3 days. But it was completely worth it.

And what's this I hear about free lift tickets if you stay in a suit there? I stayed in one that weekend and got no free lift ticket.

Anyone going up this weekend? I'll be up there on saturday, hit me up if you plan on going.

I think we're just gonna go for the condo and say screw it because we don't know the area at all and we want to play it safe.
