i know this is kind of a newbie question but if you have a crank with three different speeds on it can you convert the same crank to single speed ??

Just un bolt the 3 rings. Then place what ever new ring you want in the place where the middle ring used to be. Oh and get a bashguard and bolt it in place of the old outside (biggest) ring.

yes. take the crank arm off the bottom bracket, undo the bolts and remove the granny and big rings and you now have a single ring! you can put a bash in place of the big ring or leave it open if you are going to tension it and have a single ring in the back (like a bmx). you may need a shorter bolt set, as you are no longer bolting the granny and middle ring (now middle only). be sure you check your chainline if you are going to run a single speed.
you can get an inner bash (it will mount to the granny spot) for guide/bash purposes to keep the chain on the ring.
