new bike for a newb

My friend is getting a new bike soon and needs advice. His price range is 900-1300$. He wants to mostly ride trails, all mountain pretty much. Mostly light dh and uphill. Probably a full suspension but mayb a hardtail.

doesn't matter as long as it meets the requirements and is in his price range.

If he wants to stay in his price range and doesn't mind a used bike, he can go with a used stumpjumper. It's a good bike for the non-hardcore, assuming that's what your friend is. If he's not hardcore, go specialized, or giant, or GF. They all make good trail/AM bikes that can be had for 1000-1400 used. Once he gets his appetite wet with one of those bikes, he can decide whether or not he wants to upgrade to a real bike later on.
