I've been riding alot more XC recently and am going to be joining my university's road team next year, so I need to learn to use clipless pedals. What are your favorites?
I'd be swapping them onto a road bike in the fall - is there a major problem with doing this / do road pedals offer a unique advantage?

I use basically the same pedals on my mtb as on my road (well, cx) bike without issue. There was a thread in the road forum on that subject a few months ago, I think (started my douglas). There's not a huge advantage, really. Some comfort over long distances.
As for which pedals, you're probably going to get a few different answers. Lots of people like Time and Crank Brothers. A few use Speedplay. For road, Look is pretty popular. Personally, I'm a huge fan of Shimano. They are extremely reliable, versatile and offer good performance and adjustability. I have had a bunch of models and all are still working. I even have a pair of 747s that I just retired (they were top of the line maybe 6 years ago) even though they worked fine. Based on my experiences with the 959s, the 970s will be amazing. The lower end ones are good as well- just heavier and maybe slightly less durable. So, I'd go for 970s then the 540s or 520s if you don't want to spend so much. Or look on ebay and get an old pair of 959s or similar. They are all great.

I use candies on the mountain bike, eggbeaters on the road. That way, I can use the same shoes and I like the different platforms.

Definitely something to consider. I do the same thing, but with Shimano. 520s on my xc, 959s on the cx and 647s on the dh.

Just be sure to get a good quality shoe with a stiff sole. Otherwise the relatively small contact point of the MTB pedal can cause for discomfort on longer rides.

Times on the dirt for sure. I have been riding them on both bikes, but think I will soon opt for road pedals on that bike.

I have been using 959s for years. I like them on my touring and street bikes, I think they are fine road pedals as well. a:)

Douglas what did you use pre- Crank Brothers?
Crank Bros. Eggbeaters on my road and XC bike, Candies on my SS. Also note that Crank Bros. has awsome customer service and replaced a broken pedal of mine in under 1 week, no questions asked...

soo, after tons of recommendations for the Time Atacs, i got a pair of those and some shoes, which arrived today...
I immediately mounted them and then spent the next two hours riding back and forth on my block, crashing into virtually everything. Any tips?

Learn trackstands, and make sure you don't have the release tension to tight.

If you like float, crank brothers. I tried 'em and hated them for the massive amounts of float and super light release tension.
I don't like float or light release tension, so I stick with SPD's. They work, and well. I like proper road pedals on the road for the nice stable platform, but it's not a big deal to use your mountain stuff.
