Anyone considering doing this? Looks interesting. Could be a good trainer for me for the two man 24 hour race at Ashford I'm doing with teh Splat.

I disagree.
Geez the age category 19-39. So a 39 year old fart like me would have to go up against youngsters eh? I'd get so schooled it isn't even funny. :dead:

I'm more interested in riding for six hours in a competitive enviornment than I am getting a good finish. I do think I'd probably have a crap finish.

You will be fine. Youngsters typically don't do so well in endurance events. It is a game best suited for 30 somethings. Hell that is one of the reasons why I prefer long distance stuff. I can hand out spankings to Youngin's who school me during regular races.

Mark, check out the times in some of the local XC races, many times the 30-39 & 40-49 are faster then the 19-29.
I randomly picked one:
expert class at MOTM#2 '06
19-29
1 1:55:30
2 2:03:06
3 2:09:14
30-39
1 1:48:25
2 1:49:54
3 1:53:25
40-49
1 1:51:06
2 1:54:42
3 DNF

I Plan on doing this too. Maybe a 40+ year old slow fart like me will stand a chance at not being last.
I guess I just keep thinking about that one UConn kid at the Churn and Burn who rode like a bat outta hell for 12 hours - but he wasn't doing that solo was he? or mayb ehe was?
Either way you stack it up I'd be slow.

PLUS I am pretty sure he's semi pro, so he'd be in the Pro catagory, so you wouldnt be racing aginst him being you'd be in beginer or sport

IAB & MmcG could do Beg being they have only done (I think) 1 race before.
Earl would have to do sport. (theres no day of expert license)

* until you have three top 3, or five top 5 in a USA cycling/NORBA XC race (with a minimal of 15 racers), you can race beginner *
ps: 24's dont count

I would definitely be Sport, but I don't think Earl would be doing it...he's talking about doing an off-road Triathlon the week before.

my orthopedist just took a look at my permanently swollen knee and said "WOW!" go get some MRI's done and i'll schedule your surgery. then, he actually looked at my knee...drained over 80cc's of fluid and ran out of container's or he could have taken out more...your knee is supposed to have 2cc's of fluid:nopity:
i'll find out next tuesday if i'm doing anything this summer...

YOu were at my one and only XC race - and as you know - I didn't get very far in that one. :(
I still think of you and your being unable to unclip your shoe from your pedal in Winsted!!! But at least you didn't get a DNF like me.

mert - that does not sound too encouraging. Keep us posted.
Perhaps it might be best to have the knee taken care of (whatever that may mean) now so that in the long run you'll have many many more years of riding in front of you.
Sending my best your way.

This looks tempting but I'll probably be at a family party in Chicago that weekend.
I heard through the grapevine that for the XC race they are holding this weekend that they removed the 2 mile long hill from the course. I wonder if it would be part of this course?

The website says the climb isn't as long as it was for the 24 hour races. They cut off part of the climb and send you into singletrack.

I'll find out if this w/e's course (which I pre rode wednesday ) will be the same. If so, then yes you dont do any of that paticular long road climb, but I am pretty sure theres close to the same amount of climbing, just broken up into different sections of the 8 mile course.

I'm bailing on this race. I've decided to go to KT that weekend with Wifey and a couple of monkeys. This was the only weekend our schedules all jived.
Three days of riding > one six hour race
Has it morphed into a Cyclocross race anyway?

maybe being they are trying to get CX guys to race it as base miles for the CX season
What made you think that ?
All of the photos of guys on CX/Road bikes on the bikereg site.
Also because it says it is a warm up to the VT 50 or whatever.
No biggie. Looks like the "promoters" of the race do put on a major CX race as well.
You racing in it splaticus?

the VT50 is not a CX race.

I know that too. But it does say something on the site about a warmup for the VT 50
I guess it was just all the photos of guys on road or cross bikes rather than on mtbs on that page for the race that got to me.

yup, I did!
It was great! The racers, the course, the feedzone, the weather...all great!
Course: 6.75 miles, pretty much a figure 8 so if you brought a friend/pit person they could hook you up twice a lap. But my pit consisted of 6 prefilled bottles in a cooler, I did 3 stops there and 2 more to pee. I drank 7 bottlles! The course had a little bit of everything, field, dirt road, single track, climbs, roots, bridges, fast decents, rocks, streams, and the "over".
I was happy with my performance especially with pretty consitant lap times. Started w/a 43, did a bunch of 45's, then maybe up to a 50 and threw down a 48 for my 8th lap, putting me into 4th expert old farts...8 laps, 53 miles in 6:17

Good job Doug!
I would have liked to enter the race but I was out of town last weekend. The last time I raced there was summer '06 at the XC race and it was brutal, so brutal that they changed up a bunch of stuff for this years Root 66 race earlier this summer.
What is left on your race schedule for this fall?
douglas
08-23-2007, 08:20 AM
thanks...I was checking the lap times last night and my friend put down his fastest lap in his 7th (and last) lap...he was scared he wouldnt finish it by the cutoff time! (6:30)
yeah, too many people complained about the long dirt road climb so they havent been putting that in any races.
me (definite)
Platty#3
Platty#4
VT50
maybe:
Mount Snow/Root66 or Foliage Whiteface climb (same day)
Local CX races
whats your schedule?

I must be the only one that likes that climb @ Dalton :twitch:
Ashford > I dont have a real Solo in me, and I dont want to do one and spend 1/2 or 1/3 of the time off the bike.
plus theres the 1-2 weeks recovering
plus I'd have to find a pit crew
AND You all wanted to a duo so team 4MAAB didnt happen, and I didnt hear of anyone looking for a 4th so I decided to spend that money to go to KT instead :D
I really liked the DH40 (miler) and Dalton 6 hour, no crew needed, a couple days to recover, less money, etc so I'll seek out/train for that length of race...I cant wait for the VT50!!!

This what I have penciled in, but the central park races are always tough around the holidays.
9/9 - Plattekill XC #3, Root 66 Landmine Classic or Blue Mountain Chain Stretcher (still undecided)
9/16 - Root 66 Mt. Snow XC Challenge
9/30 - Tymor Park Challenge
10/6 - Plattekill XC #4 or Lake Desolation Hill Climb
10/21 - Uncle Sam CX race in Troy (maybe)
10/28 - Central Park Halloween Race
11/22 - Central Park Thanksgiving Race
12/23 - Central Park X-mas Race
douglas
08-23-2007, 09:13 AM
I'll be at the central park ones too (if they happen), oh and Darkness at 909 (if it happens). I so wish the Lake D climb was Saturday so I could do that & Platty.

Doug - How have the turnouts been at plattekill? They look a little small from the results on the site.
I'm actually learning towards picking the Hudson To Highlands race that has been having 20+ sport racers in my age group each time. The Root 66 race is close to 4 hours away, a little outside my range.

Platty turnsout are low, I think its a combo of having 4 races there and XC'ers being scared, but I am in for the entire series being its the NYS championship.
