If there is anyone wanting to get back in there, things with the grant finally got back on track and the county has finally agreed on a FIRM boundary to allow progress. Todd Branham's company got the contract and built a brand new loop.

BUT, matching volunteer hours are REQUIRED to get the grant money to finish. Please help!

Just in case you missed National Trails Day, don't fret we have more! Please see schedule below. Craig, Art and I just placed in the stringers for a bridge this morning.
See pics on Yahoo site.

Hey guys. I wanted to see if everyone is cool with scheduling the 3rd
Sunday in June as a SORBA workday out at Alexander Park. There is a
requirement for a whole lot of volunteer hours to match the grant
money obtained through the bicycle dealers association. Long Cane
Trails has about $30,000 invested in time and equipment in this
project and they won't get paid until there have been 400 volunteer
hours donated. That's just the match for the work done so far. More
will be required later. Now I know SORBA never made any commitment to
promote this project, but so far I haven't seen a whole hell of alot
of activity from the bike shops. The Warren Wilson College folks have
consistently stepped up to the plate and they should be commended. It
would be a shame for Long Cane Trails to get screwed when Asheville
has so many Mtn Bikers who could help out. Having a venue like
Alexander Park gives us a place to have XC races, 12 hr races, or time
trials without all the USFS rules. That would help us gain membership,
raise money, and have fun. I want anyone who has an opinion on this to
speak up. There will be be work days practically every weekend in June
out there, so there is no excuse for not helping except for apathy and
laziness. I challenge every bike shop to do something for this project
if you want local riders to support you.

Craig Friedrich at Ski Country is in charge. Here is the work schedule
he sent me:

Sunday June 10th Meet time 10:30am
Sunday June 24th Meet Time 10:30am – Cook out for the volunteers
afterwards.
Wednesday June 6th Meet time 8:00am
Wednesday June 20th Meet time 8:00am

All work sessions will be around 4 hours.
No work sessions if it is actively raining.
Meet at the main trail head for all work sessions.(Smaller parking lot
across the road from the river)
Please help us spread the word.
Call Craig if you have any further ideas or questions. 254-2771
