View Full Version : Go-Ride 888 Crowns

I posted this in Freeride too. There no response though after several hours, also I'm sure some of you might rock the 888 as well. I know I am gonna DH with it. So here it goes.
I just got an 888, and was searching the web for a direct mount stem. I came across the replacement crowns offered by Go-ride, and they look enticing. I am contemplating both their lower, and upper crowns to eliminate the need for a stem with it's direct mount system, and lower the height with the lower crown, and get my head tube angle steeper. I have not measured it yet, but it is way slack now. I am using my 888 on a 05 Mongoose Black Diamond frame. My question is are these worth the $300, and are they a quality product that will stand up to some punishment. Or should I quit looking into it, and just get a Marzocchi direct mount stem, and be done with it.

Yes it's worth it if you have the old drop crowns.
I've been using them for 3 years.

Yeah i bought an 05 it has a bit of drop to it, but not like some I have seen. No complaints? I actually kinda like it. It has became quite the plow bike. Just rode it around town, and I feel nothing. All the little loading docks, and stuff feel like speed bumps. The 888 with 8", and 7.5" out back is plenty for me. I need to go find something bigger to jump now.

Yes, they are nice quality product. I have run both the upper and lower for two seasons and had no problems. The upper is WAY stiff and the lower definetly drops the front nice and low.
The only drag for me was that my headtube (med intense m3) was very tall, and there was not much excess stanction between the upper and lower to give me any adjustment since the upper crown does not drop down at all; its flat, so the stanctions need to come up far enought to reach the upper crown flush with the top of the headset. So for me it brought my front down almost too much; I would have liked some adjustment to slack it out a degree or two. After talking with Scott at Go-Ride, he felt it was the lenght of my headtube, as his bikes had a good 1/2 inch of stanction sticking out the top of the upper crown.
Where in Ohio are you? I am in cleveland and im not using this setup currently if you want to mock it up and see what it would look and feel like.

I am in Mansfield so only an hour away. That would be awesome. Where do you ride at maybe we could meet for a ride sometime. Not sure what is up there. I mostly run the Mohican Wilderness, and private trails.

You didn't say what year 888, but if you do some searches here you should find info on the effects of the go-ride crowns on your model year. If I remember correctly, if you are talking about the original 888 the go-ride crowns reduce the axle-crown distance by almost a full inch and steepen the head angle a full degree. I've had a set for a few years as well with no problems, no creaks or anything. And yeah I just run the stock integrated stem.
Check these out for a cheaper alternative.

I just ordered myself a set.

Wow that looks even better. For the price of a good stem, a whole crown set. I might have to get a set of those.

2005 should ahve been the first year Zoke changed theirrowns to flush. I had an 05 Works 888 and and '04 stock 888. Stock 04 was tall crowns, stock 05 888 was tall crowns...BUT '05 WORKS 888 had a custom Marzocchi flat crown. If your lower crown has a red MARZOCCHI logo and it is "machined", you're set. If it's got the molded "M" styling to it, you've got the arched crowns.

I've been running the Lowriders since I got them for my 05' 888 and have since switched them to my new 06' 888 RC2X.
They are burly and definitely of a high-caliber design. The manufacturing is top-notch as well with the tolerances on both CNC'd crowns machined to spec or better. The custom drop-crowns that Butch was talking about that Marz put on their Works forks for 05' bear a striking resemblance to the Lowriders albeit the red "Marzocchi" label on the front of the lower crown.
I've never had any issues with my Lowriders and love em'.

Ah yeah mine look nothing like that. It is a molded M design, just like my old Z1. I'll snap some pics later. Been ridding it a little, man is it fun.

yeah i ride mohican a couple times a year. honestly there are no real places to ride around here. west branch is ok, but probably still soggy, vultures knob is alright too, but still an hour and a half for me. My xc/trial bike is in pieces right now as well.
I may be interested in selling the lower crown if your interested. drop me a line: chrismac456@mac.com

Thanks Chris. I sent you an PM. Now I have done some searching, and I have found we have:
Go Ride $145 upper, and $165 lower, $310 for both
http://www.go-ride.com/goride_products/switch/switch_main.jpg
http://www.go-ride.com/goride_products/lowrider/lower_crown.jpg
Risse Racing $150
http://www.risseracing.com/images/products/888_gold.jpg
Inertia Project $110
http://www.inertiaproject.com/dropcrownaffair_files/image026.jpg
Now I cannot justify paying 3 times as much for Go Ride if there is nothing advantageous of going with it. Go-Ride, and Inertia Project both come with proprietary integral stems, and Risse uses the stock Marz integrated stem. I don't like the clamping design on the upper to the steerer tube on the inertia project. IMO it looks weak, and cheesy. Hard to believe that is all they could come up with. Risse, and Go-Ride, I like the design. So that leaves Risse, and Go-Ride. Which after I get a stem for the risse, I will be almost 250 so it is only a 50 dollar difference now.
Are there any other options out there, does anyone know. This is all I have found, in my searches.
Ya the upper steer tube clamp design is definitely interesting! Not a huge fan of the risse so I ruled it out. I couldn't pass it up over that little detail for the price difference between it and the go ride.

you'll kick yourself if you DON'T get flat crowns. Oh...and don't forget. See if someone has a thrashed out or destroyed 06 888 you can get their crowns for pennies.

Oh I will get a set. It is just a matter of time. I will probably buy Chris's Go-Ride lower if the price is right, and then get an upper later on.

have you thought of calling a Zoke distributor to see if you can get a set of used or new stock crowns from an 06?
Heck...just the lower crown is really all you need.

Nah no I haven't not a bad idea though. I want to get both if I get the Go-Ride stuff, because I really like the upper's design, and the integrated stem.
