what is a front Derailleur, what is its purpose,and is it a good thing to buy.

A front derailleur is a device that changes gears. It is used for major changes, most mountain bikes use both front and rear derailleurs. normally with 3 gears in the front and 9 in the rear (older or cheaper newer bikes may have 7-8 speed rears).
Do you need one? only if you want wider gear choices, does your current bike have one already? most do but some bikes only have rear drailleurs and some bikes have no derailleurs at all they are called single speeds, I hope this helps...
