I've searched, read everything here and on MTBR, and still need to ask. Thanks for any input.
So I'm looking at a BR for a play bike. For trips to Diablo, Showshoe, etc., and for occasional trail use. Is the Totem too much for the bike? I think the extra travel and slacker HA would be nice for DH, but is it too much for anything else?
Also, regarding size, at 5'8" I'm on the small by Transition's recommendation. But, again for DH use, the extra wheelbase on the medium may be nice.
I'm currently riding a medium Heckler w/ 22.5" tt and 70mm stem, which puts the overall reach at 641.5mm. A medium BR w/23" tt and 40mm stem has a reach of 624.2mm, over half an inch less. My Heckler is already short for trail riding, so a half an inch shorter than that seems plenty short for DH/FR. Am I nuts for thinking the medium BR may be a good idea?
Thanks for any and all advice.

im around the same height as you and im running a small BR. i like a smaller cockpit, but i ride everything, pedaling up hill is no problem, the seat raises plenty high enough for me. freeriding and jumping the bike rocks and just this weekend i raced DH at diablo in the Ameture class fof the first downihll domination race and the bike felt good, im running a 2007 talas 36r up front the bike got a little bogged down in the long rock garden and made me wish i had a little more travel up front but other than that the bike ripped all over the mountain and i hit all the big jumps and drops and dont get me wrong it still handles the rock gardens but ina race when your haulin ass you may wish for some extra in the front, but get the 2-step then you can adjust the travel up front. the bike is a ton of fun for sure, it covers all aspects for myself.

Thanks.
I'm not looking to race, just to ride.
I forgot to mention that I have a Pike and a Travis 150 already, so it would make more sense to pick up a longer travel fork.
How was the rear travel in the rocks? Wish for more? Does it bottom off drops?
I'm still stuck on which size, small or medium.

You are going to have to determine which is more important to you regarding the size. The smaller size will rail corners better and be easier to whip around/jump better plus ride better on trail rides , but the next size up will offer a lot of stability. If you are doing more DH on this bike i might go to the next size up.
I'm 6'1 195lbs. and I ride a medium BR with a fox 36 up front. It is great for jumping, stunts, trail riding and rails the hell out of corners. When things get fast though it gets a little sketchy. I have a full on DH rig (Iron Horse Sunday) though so it gets the DH duty.
The totem will rake out the bike more and that would help lengthen the wheelbase some so that may help too. If it was me I would for sure get the two step totem as you can reduce the travel and have the best of both worlds.

here is a review from the UK about the bottlerocket with a world cup on the front. defiantly seemed to work for them. I've also seen a few with 888's up front.

as for the size, I ride a large gran mal and a large TOP, but my bottlerocket is a medium and I love it. the way the bike was designed makes you want a slightly smaller size. it wants to jump more than anything, but does really well as a short travel DH bike. I rode mine all last fall as my DH bike and it was really nice. it pedaled well, and it feels like it has more travel than it really does. the only disapointment you'll have with a bottlerocket will be that TBC is sold out until june.

i'm 5-9 and a small fits perfect. diablo is a blast on a BR, never bottomed it on any drops there.

i have always wondered how plush this bike rides. i live in southern utah where the drops get plenty large and the climbing is required to get to them. i have been thinking about this or the dirtbag and am more leaning towards the turner rfx. Since cost is not as important as finding the one do it all bike i am still not sure which way to go. i do urban, climbing and plenty of drops and ski resort riding.

im 6'3 210 and ride a medium with a totem up front. love it. dont go buy the sizing on there chart. if you like to do slopestyle tricks and such its easier on a smaller frame but yet you have more responsive handiling on the dh's, or atleast i think

I went from a 36 on the bottlerocket to a totem and just recently went back to the 36...The totem was a bit much, if you are riding true dh all the time on it (which i dont know why you would ALL THE TIME) then the totem would be nice to make the bike longer, but this bike is definately most happy with the 36 or lyric...Get the talas so you can slam it and play if needed. I reallyl feel that the dhx air/talas combo makes this bike shine.

Does anyone know the price of a 2007 Bottlerocket? It looks like an awesome bike but I can't find the bike price anywhere online.

It all depends on how you build it, but with about 3'gs you should be able to build yourself a nice BR. I think Transition offers 3 to 4 different build packages that range from like $2650 to $3000:monkeydance:

is it just me or is the TBC paint job a little on the crappy side. i had cable rub to the metal in one ride. and numerous big paint chips from the most minhute dings while shuttling

Yeah, my knee took off some paint on the rear swingarm - chips and rubs off pretty easily.

If you do go with a Totem, I'd definatly use a zero stack headset. I've been quit happy with my e13 reducer cups. I'm running a 36 Vanilla RC2 on my Rocket, and it feels good. I hardly do any lift assisted riding, so it's important that the bike climb well. I wouldn't want to go much slacker with all the climbing I do on it. If you're hitching a ride to the top, the Totem could feel pretty darn good.
