Boeing shares work, but guards its secrets
By Dominic Gates

Seattle Times aerospace reporter

The first wings for the 787 Dreamliner are scheduled to land in Everett early this morning, ready-made in Japan.

In a sharp break with the past, the 787's wings are made out of composite plastic rather than metal. But, just as revolutionary, Boeing delegated to Mitsubishi of Japan a big slice of the design work.......

I think this is cool. Cool technology and decent globalisation.

But you're in a country with no technology. Of course you'd be keen on the big techno-giants handing stuff out to other places...

cushy, high-paying aerospace contract jobs are going to be lost. That is NO for me at ALL......

MMike's right I too am a victim. My previous employer built a facility in India, staffed it with locals and shipped my job over there. Especially in the computer global environment we are in today, you don't have to be sitting next to the server to work on it. A coworker went over to India for knowledge transfer he said right next to the CSC building was an IBM building, next to that another US owned corporation

I love how a story about Boeing rails about Japanese subsidies.

Intel does it all day. They staff up a huge development team, do all the research and initial development, then when they have reached a stable base, they ship the first rev to customers and the project goes to either China, or India.

Intel learned years ago that it was cheaper to ship the work to India/China than to bring the workers here. Now with immigration reform, it's even cheaper.

<edit> Become a plummer or an electrician, they can't farm out on-site labor jobs.
