MARK YOUR CALANDERS: NATIONAL TRAILS DAY IS JUNE 2ND.

We are planning a large work project in Bent Creek on the Wolf Branch trail. I am giving you a full months heads up so you can plan ahead to be there. We need as many folks as possible for this and no lame ass excuses will be acepted.

I will post the important details in a later email, but wanted to get the early word out so folks can mark your calander. We will work from 9-5 on Sat. leaving time for a ride and some beer after. If we have a lot of folks show up, maybe we can be done by 3PM. It is all dependant on you.

The fulll Trail Dynamics team will be there to lead the project. There is lots of work to be done including earth moving, 2 needed bridges, other elevated wood structures, and of course some rock work and adding some cool technical trail features including a very long log ride.

More details to follow.....

Woody

Wolf Branch is already a fun trail. It starts off with a log ride, then a nice rock kicker and then has another short (slippery) log ride towards the end.

I'm excited to have that thing get dryer. Plus a few well made bridges across the streams will help the wildlife and the riders.

Interesting trailbuilding factoid of the day:
drain pipes are bad for wildlife b/c they will not use a closed loop steel or plastic corrugated pipe to move up and down stream. So now Trail Dynamics uses pipes that are essentially an arc across a stream bed to allow critters to move through. There is a yellow one at the bottom of Side Hill and greenslick as an example.

Sounds like it blew up HUGE:

WOW!

We had over 50 people participate in our National Trails Day project and the amount of work completed was nothing short of amazing. We built 4 bridges (much needed to replace broken ones) and maintained over 1 mile of trail including some pretty serious re-construction on a lengthy section of badly eroded trail.

Everyone worked very hard and seemed to be having fun and feeling very good about the work accomplished. Thanks to all for these efforts.

We had about 5 from the newly forming SC chapter (Upstate SORBA) join us for the day which was great to have them involved.

Thanks to Mike and Claudia of Liberty Bikes for feeding the troops and providing a great place for a fun after work party. The USFS provided the cold adult beverages, thanks John Brooks for that important contribution.

I still have a full day ahead of me doing clean up and de-mobilization. There are 3 machines there that need moving, and lots of hand tools that need to get back to my tool stash room in DuPont.

These projects cost Trail Dynamics a fair bit to host. We paid all our employees for the work on Friday, and over time for Sat. We work ahead of the project developing a plan and get machines and materials in place. Machines cost real money (wear and tear) to run on any trail project and we had 6 running on this project. It always take me a full day after the project to wrap things up and get everything back where it belongs in storage on back on the job we pulled off of.

The one thing that makes this all worth while for me is working with many fine folks and having a large turn out to help. Pisgah Area SORBA now has a signature trail that we can showcase the commitment of the mountain bike community to the trail we all ride and enjoy.

Thanks again to each and everyone who came out Sat. and put in some sweat equity. For those of you who missed out this go round, we will see you next time.
