I responded to an armed robbery tonight where so local thugs, trying to earn their gang initiation, tried to rob a chinese food delivery driver with a pistol....to their surprise, the driver was also armed. we arrived to find 3 of the 4 suspects proned out on the ground at gunpoint by the driver. one of the suspects ran on foot but all three of the ones we arrested gave up the name and location of the 4th guy.
the driver had a valid concealed carry permit and did a damn good job of controlling the situation.
i'm not necessarily trying to open up the gun control can of worms, just pointing out that there are ocassions when carrying concealed can come in handy.
i love responsible armed citizens, they make my job much easier :D :thumb:

...Require permits to own handguns, require that person have a reason to need a handgun to protect themselves...
If I ruled the world this story still would have turned out well.

Why does that guy need a gun anyway? Everyone knows those oriental chappies all know kung-fu, just look at Toshi and Sanjuro, human killing machines, make Chuck piss his frilly pink knickers.

Again my words of wisdom ring true.
Ninjas are only affective against other aisians. They need guns against full sized white people.

Interesting story and I'm impressed that the guy handled it so well. My question is what if he had encountered real thugs who had been more than happy to open fire on him without a second thought? I lived in New Orleans at the height of it's murder rate in the early 90s and i can tell you that the criminals there never seemed hesitant to shoot. Are normal lawabiding delivery drivers like this guy ready for that? I would guess that if he pulled it out he was ready to shoot if necessary (to answer my own question).

Well, there may be times that you simply don't have a chance...if they want to kill you and just do so before you can begin to defend yourself or even react. Luckily, real killers are rarer than the wannabes. Armed wannabes, however, can still kill you once they've gotten their courage up, want to impress their buddies, or started worrying about creating a witness to their crime.
And in any/every case, a gun is the last resort...the first and more effective line of defense is awareness and preemptive action. If someone has the drop on you, drawing a gun is likely just going to get you shot.
People use that fact as an anti-gun argument, but I've never seen it as such. It's just a fact. Guns are neither the embodiment of evil nor a guarantee of safety nor a panacea for one's worries. They're tools and have to be used in the right way at the right time in the right context to be effective.
Honestly, the gun control debate is pretty useless. I personally think we should have tighter handgun controls with more limits on buying and selling them, within the scope of the 2nd Amendment, but that law abiding citizens should have a universally easier time getting a permit to actually carry one. It's the unlawful buyers and users of guns that are the problem...the easy availability of guns to all does make it easier for criminals to get them through straw purchases and transactions. But those who are able to own guns should also be afforded the right to protect themselves with them outside the home.
And people who use guns in crime should be put away for long, long periods of time. That's what's been so effective in NY, IMHO...the prosecution and punishment, not the lack of handguns. You can get a handgun in NY as a criminal just as easily as anywhere in the country.

moral of the story ??
all you non-gun owners need to tip your pizza delivery guys very well.
ya never know when they could be called upon to save your butt.
I fear the possibility of asshats like myself getting guns.
If I got robbed and were in an advantageous position with a gun of my own, I don't know if I'd be taking prisoners...
Although, under Utah law, I don't have to. WHOOPEE!
