Hi all! I have recently decided to get a new mountain bike for riding around town this summer and doing some moderate woodsy-trails. The last time I got a new bike was when I was 11, so I don't know much about good brands, good features, etc :P I don't really know where to start. As I said, I'll be mainly using it for riding around town and doing some trails and bike paths, nothing too difficult. I'm 5'3", 125lbs, girl, in relatively decent shape. Suggestions for brands I could start researching?

I like Cannondale, especially the cheaper models like the F4. You get a great frame and shock, better than their competitors.
C/Dale makes everything themselves in America and their quality is extremely high for a larger manufacturer.

As far as best bang for the buck... Iron Horse. Although they tend to be on the heavier side. Best thing would be to test ride a bike, then search for rider reviews. It's all about how comfortable you are with it and what kind of riding you're doing.

go to your local bike shops... ask them this question... go to a few to get a better selection and they could better answer this. They will help fit you, and you can try before you buy, so u know if you'll like it or not.

Everyone else should stop posting.
Why is it newbs are given an answer other than what Jeff said?
And in addition to that, bike shops often offer free tune-up services after purchase too.
