Anyone out there try the newer ADvantage tires from Maxxis? High volume tire but lighter. My experience so far is that many attempt at these type of tires are pretty good, but they're just not quite the same as a true DH tire.

Currently running Minions on my Yeti AS-X, love em. I notice now they don't make the Slow Reezay anymore? Now it's this new 3C stuff? Yeah or nay, are they alot better?

Anyone out there try the minions AND the Advantage? Comparisons?

A guy on here named ProFro does testing for Maxxis and has tried the ADvantage for DH.

He's ridden just about everything out there by Maxxis, and loved the grip of the ADvantage in comparison to the Minion DHF, but unfortunately the ADvantage doesn't come in a 2-ply butyl insert casing that Maxxis uses for its DH tires...

So - until they make a DH version, probably not a good idea since you will pinch-flat. Not sure how the sidewalls will hold up to a tubeless setup under extreme DH conditions and usage.

Actually, I run Stan's so maybe that's part of it. I've never flatted (during a ride at least), so I've been really happy with that. Also, most of the rides I do aren't pure DH, just really rocky, and thorny. The last ride I did was on a borrowed 575 w/ Continental XC tires, and near the end of the ride the sidewall caught a sharp rock and got a huge gash in the side. Never had that happen with my Minions.

I tried an Advantage (2.5, maybe) on the rear of my trail bike. I would never use it for a dh tire, though. Actually, I even took it off my trail bike come to think about it. The problems I had were that the sidewalls were paper thin and the treads held mud like there was no tomorrow. Maybe it'll be a good west coast dry tire, but def. not any good in the wet. I'd take a Minion over an ADvantage any day.

There were a few DH versions of the ADvantage floating around and those that have them really, really like them. But you can't get them.

I've never tried the 2.4 version of the ADvantage, but the 2.1 version is great. I have several and really like them for aggressive trail riding. For hard cornering I match a rear ADvantage with a DHF Minion on the front.

I don't have the same Maxxis hook-up that I used to have, but I can now tell you about Specialized Tires!

Agreed. ADvantage tires are paper thin in the sidewall. I ride west coast stuff and it is good on some trails as a front tire. However, you do need to run a ton of pressure to keep from pinching. I would not ever suggest you run it for a rear DH tire. I tried running ADvantages on the front and rear, and the rear just took too much abuse and it pinched and had the sidewalls sliced by rocks. The traction was good but not amazing.

I have been having better luck with my Schwalbe Big Betty as a rear tire. It may a bit on the thin side for gnar DH runs, but I think it is still pretty beefy for a light weight tire. I am currently running the firmer compound version of the Big Betty (not the gooey version). I have the ADvantage up front and the two make for a good combo on the SoCal trails.

Tell me why they don't make a 60d downhill tire:)

I was half way joking, but I did receive some 60d tires. The weird thing is that the ones I got were DH sidewalls, but did not have butyl inserts. Those only came in my Umma Gumma versions.

Soo, are they meant to be run as both F&R or no? Which do they perform best as, front or rear?

you can run them front and rear. my experience says use them in the front only if you have a tendency to punish your rear wheel a bit more. the sidewalls just don't provide enough pinch protection for me on the rear.

Well the idea behind the advantage tires is that they are High Volume tires and run at about 60 to 65 psi. at 60psi you are gonna have to work hard to pinch flat that.

high volume doesnt = high pressure

the sidewalls do say to run them at least at 40psi :disgust1:
