Im assuming you mean 9sp. der with a 7/8 speed shifter and cassette combo?

The brain is the shifter and the derailer is dumb. The only problem might be not enough adjustment in the limit screws.

a 7/8 speed cassette and 9 speed cassette are the same width correct? if this is true any 7/8/9 der. should work.

do i would be fine if I go a 9 speed derailleur?
yes it is a 7 speed shifter I have and I'm trying to find out if I can use a 9 speed derailleur. I have an oppertunity to get a good derailleur that is 9 speed but i only have a 7 speed so I'm wondering about compatability issues.

Yes you can use a 9 speed derailler on a 7 or 8 speed cassette. It will work, just make sure just like any derailler you set the limit screws.

ok thanks. I might switch over to an 9 or 8 speed in the future. I'll look into benefits and disadvantages of each setup and decide what I want.
