Hey, i've been looking online and the cheapest accomodation I can find anywhere near there is about $120 a night. Can't seem to find any backpacker or hostel accomodation.
Where do people usually stay if they're not locals? I doubt I'll be able to fork out $120a nite on top of bike and gear rental, lift pass, etc. I won't have a car so will be relying on public transport while im there if that helps ...
Any ideas?

The cheapest, place to stay that is still pretty nice is here:
Days Inn
15 Route 94, McAfee NJ 07428
(973)-827-4666
It's about 3 or 4 clicks from the mountain.
For a single bed room I'm pretty sure it's under $100.
Nice place, clean, and free bagels in the morning with coffee at the front desk.

What we did last year on our trip, we went on VRBO.com and found a guy renting his 3 Bed Room condo for $200/night. We had like 8 people and we just chipped in. If you could find people to split a condo with that would be great.
The actual name of the resort is "Mountain Creek" so if you are looking for condos to rent search on that name. The one right at Diablo is called the "Appalachian Resort", but it may set you back over $120/night.

The Appalachian Resort and the Appalachian Motel are two entriely different places:

It's a couple miles from Mountain Creek, but it should be pretty cheap.

Thanks :) Just sent them an email so hopefully i'll find out if they have anything and how expensive they are. Had a look at diablo bike hire .... and lift hire ... its gonna cost me about $120 a day just for that!! plus food, and accomodation!! Its pretty pricey!! Bike hire over here is like the equivalent of about US$20-40 a day. Its ALOT more pricey over there!

Well when Days Inn is sold out, it's the only other cheap place near mtn creek. The only thing that is different is no stale breakfast, big deal.

Marz, Traveling in the US for foreigners is a pain in the arse compared to Kiwiland. Generally very few cool cheap backpackers/hostels, hotels are characterless and/or expensive, horrible public transpo, poor information, etc. The only way to do independent travel in the US is rent/buy car and camp out of it.
Diablo is only 45 minutes from Manhattan if you drive like Jersey jerks, so you could stay closer to the city if you want or need to. In NYC there's also an outfit that runs a bus to Diablo on day trips. Link is at the Diablo website, and I assume they're still running this year?
However, in Vernon, I've read on an Appalachian Trail bulletin board that there's some Christian hostel for $5 a night (!). They have something like an 8-9 pm curfew and they make you clean and God forbid, pray and stuff....I've never stayed there and don't know if they'd accept a filthy foreign DHer showing up in a car, or if this place even actually exists. I haven't actually seen it, probably just some guy's house. Maybe someone on this board knows?
You could camp at a few spots near Vernon but they all cost about the same as a Kiwi backpackers and on summer weekends will require reservations.
Ply your accent and hook up with locals. I rode DH/FR in NZ with the hospitality of local riders everywhere I went.

hmm i dont think i'll be hiring a car cos im doing amtrak for most of my travelling.
That hostel/backpackers you're talking about mite be the one i was sent a link for earlier ... I guess after a day of riding a curfew isn't too bad. Hmm but mite be a bit annoying. I mite look into it anyway.
That sux that there's hostels everywhere else in the usa except New Jersey it seems, lol. just my luck. Wish there was some mtb hostel so you meet other riders, have somewhere to stay AND people to ride with.
