View Full Version : TI Spring On A DHX?

Ok someone just told me that you can't put a RCS TI spring on a Fox DHX 5.0. He said it rubs the shock. Is this correct? I swear I have seen many DHX's with TI springs on them......... Can someone shed some light on this for me? I did a search and didn’t find anything on the RCS TI Spring. I do remember seeing were someone was trying to put another brand of Ti Spring on their DHX and had to shave the TI spring down.

Thanks

Look at the go-ride website. RCS springs work on a DHX.

btw the nukeproofs springs are insanely expensive in the states.

I have them on my DHX shocks, a 350 & 500, they bot work perferctly. I was told by Go-Ride that anything bigger than a 500 will rub the bottom out barrel though.

The RCS coils do fit I ran one a few seasons ago. The only place they touch slightly is on the boost valve adjuster. It's minor but I took mine off to be safe. You can still adjust it and it doesn't do anything to the shock. Simple set-screws to remove. Works fine zero issues.

progressive ti springs fit great, if you can find them. What size do you need?

Thanks guys. I thought the guy that told me this didn't know what he was talking about. Glad that is cleared up.

Can't you get the Manitou TI springs anymore. Fit the DHX and are lighter than the RCS springs.

I'm running a #450x3.0 Progressive spring on my 5.0 and it works great, no rubbing.

I was told that the heavier springs would rub. I have a 500lb by 2.75" and it's close but fine. I have a Manitou spring, which is a little different to the way the RCS coils are. Anyway I'm going to pop off the boost valve adjuster just to be sure.

Actually Manitou springs are RCS springs.

RCS is the only game in town when it come to Ti springs for MTB - as far as I know anyway.

RCS makes the springs for Manitou, and then Manitou puts their name on it.

I think that was the case for RCS and Progressive springs, I'm pretty sure the Manitou springs are either a different manufacturer or differently spec'd as the the coils are different.

is there any difference in quality between springs??I mean are RCS better than NukeProof springs or they are all Ti springs same in quality of materials and durability??

So the deal is that the RCS made and branded springs are 1.43" ID. A DHX spring is 1.37" ID. Because of the larger ID, the RCS springs can touch the res on the shock. This is a combo of the OD being a bit larger, and the spring being able to shift off to one side or another due to the large ID. The older DHX's also had a larger bottom out knob, making the situation worse.

To keep the spring centered, RCS makes a machined delrin adapter (orig made for the 5th) OR you can go to any hardware store and pick up a couple plastic plumbing compression fitting seal/washers for a dollar and put one at each end of the shock. They will keep the spring centerd on the shock body.

High value springs might still rub due to the larger wire diameter used..if that is the case, remove the B/O knob.

I got my RCS spring Ti from Go-Ride and it fits just fine. It is VERY close to the piggy-back, but nothing to worry about.

Nah CBJ is correct, the manitou springs are lighter. They have bigger spacings between coils, so less coils, and are lighter (sometimes quite significantly!) for a given spring rate/stroke.

If RCS do make the springs, they are made to very different standards. I'm inclined to believe that's not the case, compare them side by side and you'll notice manitou ti springs have a cool goldish-glaze finish to them that progressive/RCS don't.

So I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't RCS-made, but either way they aren't the same. If I was spending the big bucks on a ti spring, i'd definitely go manitou.

The only time I wouldn't is if you need a springrate accurate to more than 50lbs. Manitou only make them in 50lb steps, other brands will let you get things like 275's and 325's which can be handy on overly low leverage bikes like sundays.

Just read this on another thread:

My Question:
So has anyone else tried a Manitou 2.75" Ti Spring on a 3" stroke shock like a DHX? I have always been told that you need to use a 3 to 3.25" on a 3" stroke shock.

Don't know about manitou but 3in Ti Nuke proof will fit a 2.75, there's only a few mm diff between a 3in Ti and 2.75 steel.

My 400 RCS Ti spring does rub on the shock, because it can move a bit because the ID's are not the same for Fox and RCS.

It doesn't affect performance, nor is it noticable when riding

Not a DHX, but I'm assuming 6-ways have a tad more room.
So what should those of us who need a 550 or higher do? I'm picking up a new shock very soon and was planning on a DHX but if a ti spring is going to be an issue I'll just go with the Roco.

Didn't they changed the distance the Reservoir is away from the body from 05-06 because that shock is an 05.

No. You need a spring with at least 3" of travel (before the coils will bind) to work properly on a 3" stroke shock. I have used 2.75" RCS, 5th and Manitou ti springs on 3" stroke shocks in the past with success, although i did need a spacer to get the RCS to work properly.

I think what daver said is that progressive and manitou 2.75" ti springs WILL work fine on a 3" stroke shock. The RCS did too with a spacer.

He's the one I was quoting when I mentioned it before - cause I distinctly remember he said it worked for him.

You got that right?

I have been using an rcs 500lb for two seasons on my dhx 5.0. it does rub on the boost valve, but its not an issue. I will probably end up doing this, taking the boost valve adjuster off.
