Staying in south america till May 3rd.
Hey all,
So yesterday I made some slight changes to my travel plans. Instead
of heading back to the states March 28th I decided to stay another 5
weeks and come home May 3rd (the change was only $130 so I did
it).
This puts me back in the states very late Thursday night before the
Fontana National. I´ll see you all then.
For now I plan to get my Hero Honda Passion all fixed up from the
last 9400kms I put on it heading south to Ushuaia and back. When
I´m done fixing her I´ll head north and definitely check out Peru and
Bolivia, and depending on timing maybe hitting up one or a
combination of either Ecuador, Paraguay, Colombia or Brazil.
Right now my plans for after Fontana (if I do it) are to do a 14+
week roadtrip with some Canadians. I plan to head up to Whistler on
a Greyhound, then straight to the east for races in Bromont, Ste.
Anne and also the US Open. Then back to the west for Crankworx
and a Canada Cup on Vancouver Island. Somewhere in all of this
mess I´ll take a flight back and forth to Vermont for the US
Championship race.
Should be fun, and hope to see you all at some point.

Hey all. The pictures that were posted up are all from Argentina. The first two were taken by a guy I met at a police/military checkpoint just outside Esquel, Argentina. He had ridden his motorcycle from California which is what I originally wanted to do, but ran out of time and money. Next year I will be riding south.
Since I wasn't able to ride south I instead purchased pretty much the cheapest thing I could find in Santiago. It is a Hero Honda Passion 97cc made in India. I got it for 620,000 Chilean pesos ~ $1,100usd. It was used with 5,500kms on it and it now has 14,900kms. Far enough to go to New York and back I think.
The picture Vitox posted was taken on the road that went up to the site for the UCI PanAmericans. Vitox's fuel pump went bad on his truck the second night he got there. Well I had practice the third morning and needed to get up, so why not use the Passion. The guy riding (The Alien) didn't know how to shift a motorcycle in the morning. After a couple minute lesson we tied 2 tubes together and then tied that to the rack. On the way down we also had a passenger. A couple weeks earlier I thought it was crazy that some people would tie a rope to a car and then get towed to the top of a course. A couple weeks later and I think it's just perfectly normal.
Right now I'm in Santiago and plan to head north in 2 days. The last couple days I spent fixing my moto. It included a new chain, counter-sprocket (1t larger), sprocket, spark plug, oil, front and rear lights, and clutch lever. I thought this would cost me hundreds of dollars, but wound up only being about $50usd. I even did a bunch of mods to get rid of useless and broken parts. I am also going to pack much lighter for my next phase. There are some super high-altitude sections going to Bolivia and Peru. My first crossing to Argentina was at 3100+ meters and the bike was struggling. I was crawling up at 40kms/hr on some sections.
For now here is a picture of my bike on my way back from Ushuaia, Argentina. Soon after this picture was taken the winds picked up. Lucky for me they were head winds. Nothing like going full throttle and only moving 50kms/hr. I later met a guy on a scooter who was only going 3o. All of a sudden my 50 left way quicker.

I took two years of Spanish in high-school and a year in college. The last class was more than 6 years ago and I have since forgot most of what I learned. If you don't use it you lose it.
I have a couple ok maps which help me get around. When I get lost I just ask a person in the Spanish I know and can usually figure out for the most part what they are saying. You just need to listen for the key words like left, right, straight, bridge, church...I usually will repeat what they said in the Spanish I know and use my hands just to reassure that I'm going to right way.
Over the last 6 weeks I have picked up quite a bit, but I would like to really study over the next 9 months so that when I come back I can
carry a decent conversation. More so that I can talk to the beautiful women. All the super hot ones I've met don't speak any English. I could care less about being lost, it makes for an adventure.

Alfonso,
Unfortunately the rukus in Santiago hasn't affected me at all. I would actually have loved to go and check it out, but I'd rather pass on being sprayed by those trucks. If I recall from what Vitox siad they have either waste water in them or some sort of pepper.
"(March 30, 2007) Flying rocks and teargas marked the 22nd annual Young Day, which commemorates the slaying of brothers Eduardo and Rafael Vergara Toledo by Augusto Pinochet’s military forces in 1985."
Today we went to get pizza from a Brazilian joint and they had a newspaper in the front. It had a picture too funny to not take a picture.

This kid can't be much more than 8 years old and he is being chased by a cop in full on riot gear.
As for the KTM unfortunately my financial condition coming back from South America will be pretty dismal. Then I'll be on the road for a while. If I don't sell a bunch of my extra stuff down here I'll probably have to sell the extra KTM pretty soon. It would be dope to ride south with you guys though. Maybe if I can sell my streetbike and supermoto...Any bike industry people out there want to sponsor me so that I don't have to sell everything I own to race?
And to answer some other peoples questions. Just as Fraser said I really didn't plan much for this trip. Most of it I have pretty much come up with as I went.

Here is all I brought with me to South America. There was another carry-on that was not in the picture because I was hiding it from TACA airline. It was way over there 22lbs limit and they were being pretty anal about sizes and weights of bags. In those bags were all my clothes, DH gear, Moto gear, camping gear, my DH bike, 3 extra tires, and my maps/books on South America (remember I really didn't research. I did most of my research at night in my tent).
My bags were all overweight to the point that I was seriously considering wearing my moto suit and boots on the plane. They probably weigh upwards of 15lbs.

he normally doesnt...
i was picking up a set of brakes at his house a couple years ago, when he had his Yamaha R1(maybe not an r1, but a fast bike), and asked "so how fast have you taken it"--- he responds "gets up to 175 pretty quick".....he had been going 80 on the freeway in jeans/tshirt, cop comes up behind him, flips his lights, and he books it.... 175 in jeans and a tshirt.
thats when i knew he was crazy.

Hey, we were all young and stupid at one point in our lives. I am now a bit older and a bit more smart. I still like going fast on the bikes in the dirt and pavement, but I am limiting my top speed by selling the R1. The KTM will still go 120mph+.

Alex,
It´s funny that you posted that picture. While riding through Peru I saw quite a few of those signs. It has something to do with no putting rocks on the roads. Right after I saw one I saw a couple kids putting rocks in the roads so that cars would run them over.
I also saw a bunch that looked like a tire on fire. I wish I would have taken a picture. They have something to do with not burning tires in the road. I guess it is a common practice in Peru...

right Metal! Don't put rocks on the road signal. That picture seems to be near Nazca, 450 Km. south Lima and on the way to Cusco (1,150 Km. from Lima).
It's a great trip to make, lot of things to do and watch, specially if you go with your MTB. Great trails all over the way to Cusco.
If you plan to come to Peru again, just call me or e-mail. I will make a nice MTB program. www.inkasadventures.com
