05 7 point shock size?

I just got my new rocco shock for my 2005 iron horse 7.3. I know the shock size for the current bikes is 8.75 x 2.75. I am pretty sure that the 05's had the same size. However, the 5th element i just pulled off measures at 9.0 x 2.75. did i order the wrong size shock, or was the old shock different than what iron horse thought?

btw, is it possible to run the 8.75 shock, or would throw things way off?

There will be metal-to-metal contact before bottom out.
