Hello,

The shop just up the road has one - I've seen mtbreview-dot-com's reviews but was wondering if anyone here has ridden one and what your impression was. The other dealer here sells Treks - but I will never ride a Trek again, so that's out of the question.

Thanks,

OD

Hmm a reason not to buy one .....

I ride one ( a 2004 ) and I love the bike ! it is a fast XC bike ! and I feel very confident on it . However I must say I have beat the hell out of it ! and here are the issue I have seen.

The Derailer Hanger breaks very easily, But I have not magled a derier on it either because of that fact. But I always carry a spare ahnger with me.
I have broken the shock linkage twice this year. the new model has a beefier linkage
My rear wheel , took a beating and Kept breaking spokes till I finally replaced the wheel.
the 2nd wheel was having the same problem, so I builts up a new wheel heavy and beefy been fine since , this also may have something to do with my riding area.

Why no Treks? We carry both lines and I prefer the Treks to the FSRxc.

I used to have a Fuel 90 w/discs - great bike but support from Trek really sucked when I had an issue with the frame. As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather pay more and get an equal value than spend another penny on a Trek.

The FSRxc won't be your best bet then. I have had zero trouble with Trek, as a dealer, so perhaps it's the shop rather than them. Just saying. I'll let you know after I warranty a Fuel 90 tomorrow.

Actually I demoed a Trek Fuel at Pedros fest last year. ANd the trek Climbed like crap compared to my FSR. I much prefered the feel of the FSR overall.

I used to work for a shop that carried trek and fisher. Never had a problem with treks customer service, it was actually better than any of the other brands we carried, Bianchi, Rocky Mountain, Litespeed.

As for the bikes, I guess the trek fuel was ok when I rode it, I liked some of the rocky mountains better though, the element climbed real well when set up properly, and I think their price is comparable to specialized.

Thanks for the comments. I live near two bike shops that are "decent" - I like my son's FXRxc - I just have a problem spending $2K and only getting Deore shifters and cranks - seems like a low value mix for $2K.

I had a 2005 XC comp I loved riding it until the top tube cracked,I think the only 2 reasons it cracked is number 1 I weigh 235 ans 2 because I ride North Shore XCountry and that invovles a little more air than this bike can take, but as a bike it handled well and smoothed out the trails well it's not an xc racer but as far as for recreational XC it's a lovely bike.

If you're an all-mountain guy, i.e., you like the climbing and the descents equally well, you should really look at the Stumpjumper Comp.
Compare the specs:
FSRxc Pro (http://specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?sid=07FSRxc&bikeTab=techspec)
Stumpy Comp (http://specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=22213&bikeTab=techspec)

You could probably get the Stumpjumper Comp for $2100. It's a GREAT bike. I would venture a guess that it weighs less than the FSRxc Pro.

Good luck!

Yeah, I would go for a SJ Comp. It was ranked by MBA as the best trail bike in the $2500 price range.

I agree on the Stumpy as well. I demoed an expert in length a month ago and liked it well.

I demoed a Stumpy as well. and It was a really nice bike. the2 things that swayed me to the FSRxc ( which by the way use to be prt of the Stumpjumper line till specilized seperated them in 2004 ) .

1) the top tube on the Stumpy was shorted and I felt a little cramped , the thing climbed like a goat! as it is I put a set back seatpost on my FSR, I lke a very long cockpit.

2) the Cost! the Stumpy was considerable more expensive ( in 2004 )

and the fact that I got my used for a steal or as some have said I stole it and paid the guy to keep quiet.

Okay - great comments - I took the day off - my middle son will be getting a FSRXC RIM and I'll get the STUMPJUMPER FSR COMP. The bike shop is giving me 15% off retail - is that a decent deal?

FSRXC RIM = 1200 * 0.85 = 1020
STUMPJUMPER FSR COMP = 2200 * .85 = 1870
===============
Total = 3121 w/tax

I found another bike shop - further away, more money but I'm going to give them my business - they're $165 more than the "who knows what's going on" local shop - I spoke w/the owner of the more expensive shop - nice person, free tuneups for life, knows the bikes very well - who could ask for more, right? Mine's in stock, my son's will arrive on Monday.

Woo hoo!!

Well . . . who would've guessed it . . . sure, I stick with the plan and get the bike I wanted . . . son ends up falling in love with a Bianchi W.U.S.S. . . . really, one of the best days of my life . . . he's dang fast on that thing . . . :( . . . life is sweet!

I miss my single speed!!!

I wasn't able to get up some steep rocky stuff today on this thing that I always get up on my SS.

(puzzled emoticon goes here)

Is it too early to sell it? It's only got ~30 miles on it - it's "okay" but we're certainly no longer in the "I'm in love" category.

if you dropped that much cash on that thing, i would keep it. You will love it every time you get into some really choppy stuf, and your a$$ will love it after every ride.

I've had another three rides since the last post . . . I really like the front & rear lockout - makes climbing much easier.

I'll keep it - it'll be a good "long ride" bike.

Quick Question - can you change head tube angle and bottom bracket heigh characteristics on these like you can with older Enduros?

The TALAS adjuster affects the geo.
Its 69deg at full travel and 71deg at min travel on my '06

There are no frame geo adjustments though
