A new BBC survey has found that Israel and Iran are now the least popular countries in the world. US not doing great either.

Israel, Iran top 'negative list'

A majority of people believe that Israel and Iran have a mainly negative influence in the world, a poll for the BBC World Service suggests.

It shows that the two countries are closely followed by the United States and North Korea.

The poll asked 28,000 people in 27 countries to rate a dozen countries plus the EU in terms of whether they have a positive or negative influence.

Canada, Japan and the EU are viewed most positively in the survey.

'Traditional divides'

In January, the BBC World Service revealed polling results that suggested most people think the US has a mainly negative influence in the world - and that the numbers had increased significantly in the last couple of years.

This latest GlobeScan survey, mostly of the same people, confirms those findings.

But it also suggests that two countries are viewed even more negatively - first Israel, and then Iran.

North Korea is just behind the US.

Israel, of course, has long provoked sharp international reactions, and last year was involved in a controversial war in Lebanon.

Iran and North Korea have both been at the centre of international disputes over their nuclear programmes.

India is one country in the survey that seems to have improved its standing in the last year.

In general, opinion seems to divide along the traditional fault lines of international politics.

Israel is viewed most negatively in the Muslim countries of the Middle East, although also in Europe.

Iran is viewed most positively in the Muslim world.

Japan is generally viewed positively, except in China and South Korea.

The EU similarly gets good marks, except most notably in Turkey, and also in parts of the Middle East.The full survey is available as a link from the BBC page.

i can understand why china may have a non-positive view of japan, but why south korea? whenever n.k. saber rattles, it's at s.k. & japan. is there an unrelated beef going back to wwii??

Uh, Korea was annexed by Japan before WW1. My understanding is that everyone Asian hates the Japanese except the Japanese.

Thats because the Chinese, as well as the N.Koreans, view the Korean conflict in a different way than we in the west do. They view the SK/US side as the agressors.
I also view that we've been fed a twisted onesided propaganda of what has happened there. The other side never got their word out.

It's not even though it's on a good way towards that but has been dealyed by the democratic ruling of some member nations people, like Ireland, that were given the right to vote on the new constitution of the EU. Swedes were over run by the Socialdemocratic government last year that said that there was no need for a referendum, in an important subject like this, as it was a representative elected government to deside this.

The action of the Socialdemocrats was out of fear that the people would vote against the furthering of the EU into a US like empire, just like it had voted clearly against the EMU just a year or so earlier (and that was despite massive funding for advertisment for the EMU side).

Bottom line, the EU shares the same foreign policy, just like a single country.

To paraphrase one of N8's favourites, the Japanese loved korea like OJ loved Nicole.
The Japanese basically used Korea as a factory, the men were slaves, the women forced into whoredom. Get enough sake into a Japanese right-winger and they'll tell you that SK wouldn't be half the success it is today if it wasn't for the Japanese.
