Huh....credit checks seem kinda bogus unless you're going to have a company card...I'z gots nuttin' to hidez. That's what our corporation does with our Amex accounts. Basically the employee has to be in good credit standing in order for them to get a corporate card.

Drug tests, fine with me. Again, I don't have anything to hide. I like to know that I'm not going to have to deal with people flying high or sailing low during the work day.

A company I worked for stopped doing the drug tests - they had too much difficulty filling positions with the best people for the job...

I've always had a credit check for jobs. Of course my position has always required a company credit card too. The first company I worked for started doing credit checks after one guy ran up $50K of personal items on his company card, a credit check would have shown that it wasn't safe to issue him a card or trust him with anyones money.

In my field, I'd say drug test: yes, credit check: no

Well it all seem bogus to me. Me pissing in a cup so someone can do an analysis of my bodily makeup is very much an invasion of privacy as far as I'm concerned. If I go through todays rigorous interviewing process then I should be good enough for the job, if I do good work, then again, good enough for the job. If I am hired and I am not performing to standards... then fire me. As for the credit check... that seems TOTALLY over the top. What business is it of theirs what my credit rating is?

Westy's point about needing to have a corporate credit card... well thats different.
And some fields need drug testing for safety's sake. My personal experience is that they are testing and checking even for cubicle jobs.

But require a positive drug test ;)

I don't see a problem with drug tests either as long as the company only looks at the tests for drugs. I'm not all that anti drug but I wouldn't want to hire someone who couldn't pass a pee test especially when I look at the people I know who have failed a piss test. The law prevents employers from discriminating you about sex, age race etc, drug use is not one of those protected groups.

I look at a drug test almost as a self-control/IQ test. Drug tests aren't surprises, you always know if you're job hunting that there's the potential for a drug test, and always know if a company you work for requires random drug testing.

If someone doesn't have the self control or intelligence to pass a drug test, I don't want them working with me.

I'm with BV

When I was in the military, I am pretty sure I knew people who would drive drunk and do drugs...

and I always thought.... Is it really worth all that trouble if you get caught?

no, it's not worth it to me.

If I apply for an awesome job, which I am a perfect match for, I don't want to lose that chance because I used ... whatever .... Talk about kicking yourself in the arse.

also.... do drug tests detect roofies?
What happens if you have been drugged?

Exactly, if someone can't control themselves for a month or so I wouldn't consider them trustworthy.

Drug tests have been somewhat common around here, but the credit check pisses me off. My credit is fair, but to say I am a risk because of that is plain crazy.

I could see if I was applying for a CFO spot, or maybe accounting. But since when does a software engineer make money selling secrets? If I had any good secrets, I would just work for the competition for bigger dollars and call it a day.

there are two not-so-uncommon attributes of trade secret selling:
- "my company doesn't compensate me enough, so i'm going to get what i deserve by selling our brand"
- "oh shl7, all my billz are belong to us & need to keep the collector at bay; time for desperate measures"

this is to say nothing of the main theme to the 1999 documentary "Office Space"
