Always liked the looks of the sinister splinter and read nothing but good stuff about them. I have been doing a lot of trail riding w small drops nothing more than 3-4' and dont downhill too much. I have a chance to pick up a used splinter and am wondering if I would be better off keeping my bullit. Will the splinter be too heavy or overkill?

I looked really closely at both and went with the Splinter. I use it for everything. It is the perfect bike for me. I've ridden stuff from New Englands tight, rocky, up and down singletrack to lift assisted stuff, to Vancouver's North Shore. Even went in a DH race with it. Just change the angles and you are good to go. What can I say? I've never once wished I had more or less bike than the Splinter. (OK I've drooled over the R9 a bit.)
If you have the chance to get one, DO IT!
Check out Bustedspoke for gobs more info on the bike.

I am HUGE fan of the Sinister line of bikes... but in situations like this I ask myself one simple question - why is the splinter (or a new revised version of it) no longer availible new?
Keep the bullit...

The reason why the Splinter MX, MXS and ER are no longer produced is because FTW is focusing on building bikes around his VST platform which was developed shortly after the splinters went into production. From all accounts that I've heard the VST bikes are going to be THE platform of the future.
That being said I love my Splinter and do not plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. It is such a versatile frame that can be built up as a Mini DH bike or a All mountain bike.
38lbs as pictures but rides alot lighter due to most of the weigh being in the center of the bike.

Kinda my point. He no longer thinks it is the best design so he has invented something else.
New bullit is basicall the old design with some very smart tweaks.
And FYI - I do not own (and never have) a bullit and have nothing against Sinister. I have never ridden the Splinter - so i am looking at it from an outsiders perspective.
I'm just wary about any product (not just bikes) where the item I may purchase is no longer made.

my splinter was the most fun fs bike i have ever owned. rode way better than any bullit i have ever ridden (which have been hundreds, all my buddies growing up had them, one had 3 built up all differently, completley stupid)

The Splinter is NOT dead. We will be building Splinter ER's this spring. They will be lighter than before, and the geometry will be tweaked.
As far as a FR bike, there are a few ideas kicking around that could see production in the next few months that are neither Splinter nor VST.
BTW, I love my Splinter MX...

I've been thinking about this a bit. They don't make the Shelby Cobra any more either, but I'd rather own one of those than a Toyota Corolla any day, no matter how smart the new tweaks to the Corolla are.
If the price is right - I think the Splinter would be an excellent choice.
Go for it.

Sweet...
Still digging my 'old' ER
Great CS from Sinister too.
I'd go for the Splinter.

Thanks for all the opinions, I had almost picked up a splinter some time ago but was told that there would be a " newer better replacement for the splinter" coming soon. I held off and rode my bullit last season. So far I have not seen anything yet, at least on the sinister site. My luck as soon as I get the splinter the new version will be released and then I will want that one. Guess I will keep the bullit.( that is not a bad thing, I do like my bullit)

Passion is the Splinter replacement.
Tough decision. Cause they both own.
Pro-Bullit:You own the Bullit. So it makes $en$e to just keep it for now. If anyone tells you it sux or holds you back they: a)don't know what they are talking about or b)are trying to sell you something. Maybe some new parts to refresh it ? What is the build currently ?
Pro-Splinter: It is unique bike and that would would make it fun. So, if you think you'd go ride more and get more enjoyment on a new frame then do it. Cause that is what matters right ?

The bullit is basically as good as I want it. 66 light up front, king hubs, race face stuff etc... If I keep the bullit I might get a dhx5.0 cause the 5th is leaking a bit. The sinister does have that WOW factor going for it, nice unique ride. I will search for the sinister passion and try to find out some info.- Thanks

The Passion is a very sweet bike - or at least it will be when it is finally released. I was lucky enough to test out a couple of the prototypes and I was blown away. I think the Poison (the Passion's freeride oriented counterpart) will be my next bike if I ever tire of my Splinter. That ain't happening any time soon though.

To clear things up...
Sinister IS going to build a run of Splinter ER's this spring. They will be lighter and have tweaked geometry as compared to the last run.
Sinister will not build more Splinter MX's as we will be focusing that development time on the VST bikes and a single-pivot slalom/woods frame. All of the new Splinter linkage componets will be available to service the older frames, and of course, if any other issues come up, FTW will take care of them in his usual over the top style.
