View Full Version : Do Shimano Hydros need adaptors like Hayes and Avids?

Just bought a used front shimano set up with XTR caliper and XT Lever for a great price. Then I got the 40 deal on a Deore rear from Bikeman.com

But do Shimano Hydro brakes not need adaptors like Avids or Hayes??

My front didn't come with one, and I don't think the rear (complete set up with rotor too) did either. Can I just mount em right up?

do you mean caliper-fork or caliper-frame adapter?

Both.

Does the front need an adaptor to mount to a fork, and does the rear need an adaptor to mount to the frame. I've never owned shimano discs before.

It should be pretty easy to tell weather you will need adapters or not.

Looking at the calipers sideways (as they would sit on the bike) if the mount holes are facing at you (same as the ones on your frame / fork) then it's likely that you have the IS mount version (not post mount) and you should be able to bolt them straight on. If the holes on the calipers happen to be facing in the up-down direction then you have then they are post mount and will require adapters.

I'm looking at getting a set of XT brakes myself to upgrade the Soles.

Just wanted to ad - IS stands for international standard - which is basically what the mounts on all the frames are. My Soles are IS mount but you can also get Soles that are post mount (maybe aftermarket).

If you have any fork besides a Manitou, no problem. If you have a Manitou, then you need adapters. Shimanno are 51mm IS mount. You will probably need centering washers. These are washers that are of varying thickness so you can center the caliper on the rotor. Your frame should be all set, just bolt them on.

New scenario - what if I were to pair up the front caliper to an 8 " rotor on a thru axle fork - for a Zoke - would I need an adaptor for the larger rotor?

And for the Manitou Sherman - what would I need to run the XTR caliper up front?

Hayes makes adapters for all kinds of forks. Go to your LBS and tell them what fork and what size rotor. Your LBS could answer the second question better than I.

If it's an XTR caliper, I think the 8" Hayes adapter will work. They are all kind of different. Did you ever say what model the Deore was? They made two. If you get the model numbers, I'll PM you my number and you can give a ring and I will tell you what adapters you need. They are stupid expensive, but I might have one or two laying around you can use. No promises, but maybe.
