looking for a new fork. it needs to have 170-200mm of travel. needs to be reasonable in price, and not too heavy (this is not a huge issue though).

if its a single crown it need to be 1.5". if its 1*1/8 it needs to be a dual crown.

it will be used mainly for fr/urban and some dh. i'm a big guy so i notice if the fork is not up to par in the strength department. durability it really the main key.

its looking like i will be getting a boxxer race at this point in time. just want to make sure that i'm not over looking some key contenders.

btw it will be going on a sluggo i have on the way at the moment

I don't know what kind of urban you're doing with a 200mm fork, but I smell drops to flat.

I'd say get a coil version of the 888 for the best strength and durability.

It's not yet proven in the strength dept, but a coil sprung totem would be cool.

Have you given much of a look at the 66 forks? Mine is bombproof. I'm 6'6" and 250lbs. It holds up to me just fine. I've done up to about 10ft drops to smooth tranny and some jumps etc.... It's just as good as a dual crown for freeride. I had a 888 and sold it becuase I couldn't tell a bit of difference between the two when it came to stiffness and strength.

Just make sure and look at the 06 or 07 models as they are much better axel to crown height. The 06 has 170mm and the 07 has 180mm. For 07 they even make a 1.5 version.:thumb:

I have a Boxxer Race, that I put a Team compression damper in (making it a Team). I loved the fork the way it was before the damper, and it is even better after. I have never had anyissues with mine, and it has seen its fair share of use and abuse.

CTTRAILFREAK is right on with the 66RC forks. But,I like the 05 year because it IS taller.

I have a BOXXER World CUP & really love it. The thing you gain with a DC is that if you crash your brake lines "are pretty safe" & won't get pulled out.!
Here is a pic of my Boxxer WC with Romic top crown-stem.
"I" stay away from Manitiou & go with Marzocchi & Rock Shox..

I loved my 05, but my 06 is the ducks nutz! It's even stiffer than my 05 was! I just don't need or want a dual crown anymore. I like the fact When riding tight, slow, techy trail, I can still turn my bike.

We have lots of stuff like that on our local trail and the DC just sucks on it. I have put my 06 66 through more stuff than my 03 Monster T without a single worry! "God, that fork was heavy!!!!!!!"

OG ripper: the reason i want such a large fork is do to the geo of the bike. it will slacken the angle of the headtube to the point that i like to ride. this will make the bike more stable and the travel up front is nice to keep the bike rolling smoothly. all in all i'm a fairly smooth rider though i'm a big guy and any part has to take alot of stress do to that.

i have looked at the 66's they are tempting but still expensive. i really like that for 07 that there is a 1.5 option but it is only on the most expensive model in the whole line. kinda ruling it out unless the fund show up. also the same is true with the 888. i really like that fork though the supplies i have for the 07 stuff is much more than it was last year!! anyone know of a great price on-line for them??

good suggestions

any other options out there??

Just watch Ebay. I got a 06 model end closeout at Universal Cycles for $395.00. It was the very last one they had, and they wanted it gone! My friend just got a 66 VF2 off Ebay for $250.00 with not a scratch on it. The VF2's are not that bad a fork either. They ride much better than the 05 VF'S did and have rebound and compression! The other thing that should also make you look at the 66 line is the fact that they have the air assist wich works killer for us big guys.

I have the stock springs in mine, and run about 5 pounds of air pressure. Never ever bottom this fork. Get a deal on one, and stop messing with extra springs and still have a super stout and plush fork! I regretted selling my 05 till I got this fork! It owns!

i knew a guy who bent the crown on his and ripped it to shreds on a DH race, but that was covered under warrienty

i would like to know what he did to make that happen. sounds like the front wheel fell into a hole and got snagged to me.

Anything can break if mistreated! If he had a dual crown, who's to say he wouldnt have snapped the stanctions off below the crown? I bent the steer tube on my 05 66 but it was a defect in the steer and Marzocchi warranty dept. took care of it for free!

The steel steer I had, had the thin upper, and didn't bulge at the bottom in the correct area. Never had a problem once replaced, and the newer one I have now is still going strong!

My 06 66 is 22 1/4" axel to crown at 170mm's travel. Don't know about the 36 though. Add about 10mm's for the 07 66 as they have 180mm travel this year.

I thought Marzocchi was going to make a 1.5" SC fork.OEM only i think?

Sir_Crackien
01-29-2007, 10:50 PM
they are making one for '07. its expensive as all get out as well. also its only an option on the RC2X. most places will not begetting many of them seeing the production is going to be somewhat limited.

pick up an 06 66 RCx2. I bought one in sept 06 for $550. I am extremely happy with it on my sx trail. I was worried about going to a sc from my 888 but the 66 feels just as good. Also there are a few ways to tweak the rcx2, the 06 is pretty stiff I removed the rebound side spring and filled it almost to the top with oil and used 10 shots of air in each side, setup that way it is super plush

ah I missed that hope it works out never had any luck w/ manipooI was a little hesitant to get another manitou after being disatisfied with the shermans, but i got sucha good deal on my travis that I had to give it a shot. I am really very satisfied with my purchase and would only consider a swapping it out for a lyrik or totem.

Sir_Crackien
01-31-2007, 02:22 AM
but the lyrik is nowhere near as a baller of a fork! the totem is the hotness right now though i have to agree but at that price they are just stealing from the public (btw the shop price are not that much better on that thing either). i also got my travis on a smoking deal that i just couldn't refuse (blow out and they f'ed up discount). i have not had that bad of a problem with manituo stuff to be honest (though the stance i had suck but i could have fixed that) they actually have a clue for the most part unlike most people think. most of their problems is with that they are actually trying to be innovative and it has been a rocky path sometimes trying to get it right on the larger scale. its not like the other companies have not had their own problems in the past
