Can anyone explain to me the benefits of using a chain tensioner? Does it keep your chain from flopping around when riding through technical terrain? Do they make it harder to pedal? Thanks in advance.

it does keep the chain from bouncing around some but mostly they keep the chain from flying off the front ring(s). some add resistance more than others, but not much for the good ones

If you're converting a mountain bike to single speed, chances are that it has vertical dropouts, and you'll most likely need a chain tensioner. It just holds tension on the chain so it won't drop, like a derailleur but it's only used for single speed.

Chain guides are used to keep your chain on. Chain tensioners are used on singlespeeds.
If your need a guide, the best are found here (http://www.e13components.com/support_guide_picker.html).

Okay, I'm talking about a chain guide. My BMX bike has chain tensioners? So what is the purpose of a chain guide?

Keeps your chain on when you're flying down a hill.

More importantly it keeps it from slapping your preaty frame :) Cause really who cares if your chain pops off when riding o:)
