So, I've scoured the forum and Stevens Pass website looking for info about an 06-07 Winter DH race, but dont see a thing on the schedule. Is it out this year? I was hoping to make a return to my first and only race, in which I won...... how I dunno? Fun? Heck ya!!!!! Any news, pass it on.

stevens pass does DH racing?
wow I did not know this.
All this time I've been skiing up there, when I could be riding my bike!
I take it you all race with your expensive 100bucks a piece studded tires?
hmmm:bonk:
^^ actually Dan89 won last year, regular tires.
muddy beast
12-01-2006, 06:01 PM
damn thats sweet.
I would do it, just how hard is it?
Theres no way I would hit brookes park on my bike thats for sure (the regular area...sure, not the park though) And I dont have any armor other then a full face and shin guards...think I could get away with that?
hmm.
I wana DO IT! :-)
all youd need is a full face, falling on snow is pretty forgiving, and im pretty sure the course runs through brooks, the faaar left side looking down the mountain, over all of the small doubles.
muddy beast
12-01-2006, 06:46 PM
hmm im not sure how forgiving on brooks though, its typically icey as a mother.

well after some googling I found that last year the event seemed to be on December 16th *someone posted on the 17th how awsome the comp. was...so im asuming that was the next day* And I sent Stevens an Email...they probly dont want to advertise it because to many people will come for just one lift. I'll let you guys know on what stevens says.
but yeah if anyone has done the actually competition before, can you fill us all in? Im curious like what they judge you on, if it was hard to stick the landings, ect.
thanks.

heres the response I got...
Mr. E.,
We are indeed hosting the downhill BikerCross race this season on APRIL 1st.
We're still in the planning phase but the NO FOOLING bike event will be fun and promise thrills, spills and chills.
Hope you'll be there.

I'm not sure what the Freeze Ride was, but we did have a dh mtn. bike race last December.
We are having the race in the spring this year on April 1st.

Works for me, less cold so the need for full on snow clothing will probably be much less, the snow will be softer, still be just as fun I think. Thanks for letting us know!
muddy beast
12-02-2006, 03:02 PM
yeah no problem, I think it will be fun to ride for DH...but I duno how well the snow jumps *if any* will be.
I wish they had 2 comps though, one on the 16th and one in april...that sounds like a fun way to spend my winter break.

but yeah if anyone has done the actually competition before, can you fill us all in? Im curious like what they judge you on, if it was hard to stick the landings, ect.
thanks.
they judge you on what place you come. last year 4 riders would race at a time and the first 2 would advance to the next heat and so one. there werent that many people so i didnt take that long. all the jumps were optional and the landing werent that hard to stick as long as you arent all messed up in the air. although it is kind of sketchy going in to corners but thats the fun of it. and April! thats a long ways away:rant:
muddy beast
12-02-2006, 06:58 PM
awsome dan, thanks...doesnt sound super hard...like you said the corners are gana be the hard part

and yeah no kidding, when i found out the last one was in december i was super excited....then i find out its in april :-/

There's still snow on the ground in April.
Yes, but it sucks to try to ride on. Tires cut down in to the snow. Seems that the times they ran it in teh spring, you were better off running your bike up the faces of the jumps.
I thought they moved it up in the year last year just because of that?
muddy beast
12-03-2006, 09:41 PM
probly...but it must be to hard to do during a high peak season like this year. They probly judged that from the early snow we go this yea that it will still be decent in April, and that way the skiers and snowboarders arnt bummed from brookes being closed to them.

12-04-2006, 01:52 PM
What kind of a bike would be suggested for racing there? DH bike? seems like it would almost be overkill. Sounds like a good place for a 4x bike. Am i wrong in assuming so?
What kind of tires? I would also assume that wider tires would make more sence than studded. It's not really that icy, and you'd want to stay on top of the snow rather than sinking down into it. 2.5 minnion DHF all around?
What were some of the setups for last year?... other than a bunny suit
ChelanDHer
12-04-2006, 02:06 PM
I think if I go, which I probably will, I'm going to try and find some cheap 3.0 tires for front and maybe a 2.6 for the rear. Maybe some Kujo DH or something, just need a cheap fix.
iridebikes
12-04-2006, 02:08 PM
3.0 would definitely give you the most surface area, however less tire clearance and less snow clearance on most bikes and forks. Unless your tire choice sheds mud/snow really well.

Good point. Thankfully I'm running Monster T's so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

I will probably throw on the 2.8' WTB Timberwolves. I think you will want somthing with a soft durometer, no? These a 42d so they are really really soft.

on snow i dont think durometer makes any difference

12-04-2006, 03:42 PM
.....last year I ran my Big Hit Expert with 5# of pressure in front and rear (yeah, basically flat) . It worked great for me and I never fell down the whole day, Of course thats how I won the final, everyone else took a digger. Last year though, it was about 20 degrees, not too mention the windchill, so the snow was very firm, dry, and very stable! A race in April will definately be a whole different story. Cant wait!:happydance:
muddy beast
12-04-2006, 04:50 PM
yeah ill probly buy a mud tred for front asleast, so i can steer...the looser snow will definatly play a new factor for the race though.

There's nothing to grip to, so you're right. I believe that a harder durometer would actually be better because the knobs would be more stiff and wouldn't fold so easy.

ChelanDHer
12-05-2006, 01:21 AM
You can put screws in them, but unless you're running tubeless, it's tough to keep the head of the screws from popping the tube. Plus with the race being in April, I don't think the screws will do a whole lot of good, depends on the day though. It can be below freezing until 10-11AM, so morning runs the screws might be nice. But by afternoon it's good 'ol spring corn.

why not just take a old tire and put some screws in them eh?
The screws looked cool, but seeing them in action wasn't impressive, worse than a normal tire, they picked up and held on to clumps of ice/snow and flung it all over the place.
Big fat tires, that's the way to go (and maybe a front fender, being in April and all..... )
Tonic
12-05-2006, 01:54 AM
At least you stay warm in the bunny suit!
The tire set-up = mud tires or something with spikes and large side lugs. Maxxis Swampthings are one option. Another option, as Mr. Grubworks mentioned, is Nokian Gnazzi's. I saw a bunch of folks using the Nokian's last year.
DH bike is the way to go. The extra weight of the big bike keeps your momentum rolling.

It's posted on the Steven's Pass site that the race will be held on Jan. 7th.
Biker Royale presented by Clif Bar, probably same setup as last year, that's all I got from the site.
After the race last year they were saying that they were going to be trying to do two a year, but that sounded mostly like wishful thinking at the time.

sweet and right after christmas too so Ill have all my new parts on and have money to buy tires and stuff...they guy I emailed told me in April, so maybe he talked to someone about doing another one. I told him alot of people were stoked about it and want to go and that 2 a year would be nice...who knows.
Also, I personally wouldnt use screws...because just incase you fall, your Fckd up. If I deside to hit a jump *who knows...* I dont want to land so hard i get a screw up my azz.

Hey if you had the choice would you run an air fork/air shock or coil/coil shock?
I've heard that changing temps can via changing oil viscosities lead to fork/shock damage...
what do you think? if I could figure out how to start a survey on here I would do it for this topic...

If I had unlimited choices, I would run a air fork with a coil shock. There is more oil volume in a fork, so more chance for something to happen. Also, a forks damping is more dependent on the oil than a shock is. If you do run a oil/coil fork, make sure you put the lighest weight oil you can in. If you do run air, the ride might feel weird until you add/subtract psi, because of altitude/temperature changes.

thanks for your input Kona-ryder... makes sense... I think if I can go I'm gonna ride air/air...

I'm willing to bet you won't feel a thing. I ride in the temps hugging freezing often and don't notice a change on any of my coil/oil gear.
Ive races it before. just worry about how soft the snopw is and staying on or running...does not matter what you run on your bike...

Stevens has a ton of new snow, and it is supposed to snow more tommorow. Bikes might not work too well if there is a lot of powder

i know the temps def. affected my brakes last year. they didn't work worth a damn. the oil stopped flowing or something. back back home to warmer temps and it was like nothing had happened.

Postponed!!!!!
Just got an email from Stevens, the race is postponed indefinitely because of the incoming storm.
Howdy,
Sorry, but the bike race is postponed due to the huge amount of snow we have on the way...
We will reschedule and post the new date on the web...
